About this eSIM

Bangladesh means dense cities, rivers instead of roads and a long coastline, and on almost every leg of the trip you need your phone: to call a ride, find an address or message a driver or guide. Most routes from Kazakhstan run through Dhaka, and from there people head to Cox's Bazar, the tea hills of Sylhet or the river delta in the south. An eSIM is installed at home in advance, so after landing all you do is switch data on.

Buy an eSIM or SIM card for Bangladesh

This page is the quickest way to buy a travel eSIM for Bangladesh from 6 500 ₸. Pick a plan, pay online and install the digital SIM card at home before the flight — no passport and no queue at an airport kiosk.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Dhaka and the rest of the country.

Compared with roaming in Bangladesh, an eSIM is usually much cheaper for mobile data: the price of the package is fixed and known in advance. Your home number stays active on the main SIM for calls and SMS.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Bangladesh at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Bangladesh

The country is densely populated and journeys between cities take a long time, so you do not want to waste precious minutes buying a SIM card. With an eSIM you have internet before you even meet your driver, and one profile covers the whole country. See the plans above for data amounts and validity, and if your route includes neighbouring South Asian countries, look at the regional plans too.

Your main number stays in the phone for calls from home and bank SMS, while mobile data goes through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS, so messengers are the easiest way to reach guides, hotel hosts and business partners.

Where an eSIM helps most in Bangladesh

Coverage is best in the big cities and along the main highways, and less predictable on rivers, islands and in the hills. These are the places where you will use the internet most.

Dhaka

The capital, where a trip across town often takes far longer than the map suggests. You need internet for navigation, ride-hailing, messaging business contacts and checking addresses in the old city. Install the eSIM in advance and order transport straight from the arrivals hall at Hazrat Shahjalal airport.

Cox's Bazar

A beach resort with one of the longest city beaches in the world. Hotels, cafes and viewpoints are strung along the shore, so navigation and taxis are in constant use. It helps to save addresses in advance, book tables and keep an eye on the forecast during monsoon season.

Chattogram

The country's largest port, also known as Chittagong. People come here on business and on the way to the hills in the south-east. Mobile internet helps with maps, meetings, train and bus schedules and keeping in touch with your host.

Sylhet and the tea estates

The north-east of the country, with green hills and tea gardens around Sreemangal. Routes here run on rickshaws, buses and taxis, and drivers and guesthouse owners mostly reply in messengers. Signal can weaken on the estates, so save the map beforehand.

The Sundarbans and Khulna

The mangrove forest in the river delta is usually reached via Khulna or Mongla on a boat with a guide. Inside the reserve the connection is unreliable and in places disappears, so sort out important messages and payments in Khulna before you set off.

Saint Martin's Island

A small coral island reached by ferry from the Teknaf area. Sailing times depend on the season and the weather, so internet helps you check departures and contact your hotel. On the island the signal can be weaker than on the mainland, and guesthouse Wi-Fi is limited.

River boats and Barisal

Many routes in the south run along rivers: passenger steamers leave from Sadarghat in Dhaka towards Barisal and Khulna. On the water the connection changes from stretch to stretch, so download tickets and maps before boarding and treat mobile data as a backup.

Useful apps for a trip to Bangladesh

Main services work as at home, but a few local apps often make life easier.

Pathao

Ride-hailing and delivery

A local service for motorbike and car rides and food delivery. It is very popular in Dhaka, and the price and route are visible before the ride. Register in advance, checking that the confirmation code reaches your main SIM.

Uber

Taxi

Works in Dhaka and some other cities. Handy for the airport: you call the car from the app and do not have to explain the address to the driver in Bengali.

Foodpanda

Food delivery

A food and grocery delivery service in the larger cities. Useful in the evening after a long day of meetings or travel, when you do not want to look for an open cafe.

Google Maps

Navigation

Shows routes, opening hours and reviews of places. Before heading into the hills or to the river, download an offline map of the region.

Google Translate

Translation

Signs, menus and notices are often only in Bengali. Download the language for offline use and translate text with the camera.

WhatsApp

Messenger

The main channel for guides, drivers and hosts: addresses, photos and confirmations arrive there. It is also useful for calls over the internet.

Practical facts about Bangladesh

Currency
The Bangladeshi taka (BDT). Cards are accepted in large hotels, malls and restaurants in Dhaka, but at markets, for rickshaws and in smaller towns you need cash.
Sockets
Several socket types are in use, including C, D, G and K, 220 V, 50 Hz. It is best to bring a universal adapter.
Emergency
The national emergency number is 999. Save the address of your accommodation and the name of the area in English so you can explain quickly where you are.
Time difference
Bangladesh is one hour ahead of Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 13:00 in Dhaka. There is no daylight saving time.
Language
The main language is Bengali. English is understood in hotels, banks and tourist places, but is less useful on the street and in public transport.
Climate and season
The rainy season falls in summer and can make travel on roads and rivers much harder. It is usually cooler and drier in winter, which is when it is easiest to travel around the country.
Transport
In cities people use rickshaws, taxis and motorbikes, and between cities there are buses, trains and domestic flights. It is best to check intercity train and plane tickets in advance.
Wi-Fi
Hotels in Dhaka and Cox's Bazar usually have it, but speeds can be unstable. For banking apps mobile data is better than open networks.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Bangladesh

  1. Make sure your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can check this in the device settings.

  2. Choose a Bangladesh plan above and pay by card on the site. No passport is needed to buy.

  3. Install the eSIM at home while you have Wi-Fi: by QR code, the Quick install button or manually.

  4. After landing in Dhaka, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for that line.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. Hotspot is available on most plans, check the terms on the plan page.

Before leaving Dhaka, download offline maps and tickets: on rivers, in the hills and in reserves the signal can disappear for long stretches.
