About this eSIM

Colombia is big and varied: the Caribbean coast, the Andes, the coffee hills and Amazon-side Leticia lie in different climate zones, and between them most people take domestic flights. Your phone is needed for changing routes, checking flights, taxis, national park tickets and messaging hosts. An eSIM is easy to install at home, and one profile can serve the whole trip instead of hunting for data in each city.

Where to buy an eSIM and SIM card for Colombia

You can buy an eSIM for Colombia online right on this page from 6 500 ₸: choose a data plan, pay by card and get the QR code within minutes. An eSIM is a digital SIM card — it installs on your phone with no plastic card and no visit to a phone shop.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Bogotá and the rest of the country.

Roaming in Colombia with a Kazakh carrier is usually far more expensive, and roaming data runs out fast. With a Funsim eSIM you pay a fixed price for a data package and keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank SMS — roaming on it can stay off.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Colombia at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Colombia

Distances in Colombia are huge, and a trip rarely stays in one city: first the capital, then the coffee region, then the coast. One profile for the whole country saves you extra purchases and a search for a phone shop after every flight. Colombia plans are listed above, and if you continue to neighbouring Latin American countries, look at the regional plans.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while mobile data runs through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS, so it is easiest to message hosts, guides and transfer drivers on WhatsApp, which almost everyone in Colombia uses.

Where an eSIM helps most in Colombia

Cities and main roads have the best coverage, while in the mountains, national parks and the Amazon region signal weakens or disappears. These are the routes where you will use the internet most.

Bogota airport and connections

Many routes across the country pass through the capital's El Dorado airport, where domestic flights often change time or terminal. You need internet to check the schedule quickly, message the airline and call a taxi after landing. If the layover is long, mobile data lets you work calmly without hogging a Wi-Fi socket.

Santa Marta and Minca

A Caribbean coast city and a mountain village on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada. From here people go to the beaches of Tayrona Park and to waterfalls. Signal in town is steady, but on trails and in the jungle it is irregular. Check park entry and transport times in advance, and save the map and your accommodation address offline.

The coffee region: Salento and Cocora

Green hills around Salento, the Cocora Valley with its giant palms and coffee farms near Manizales and Pereira. Roads wind along slopes, and signal in the valleys comes and goes. For jeep routes and the valley, download a map in advance and agree a return time with your driver.

Guatape and El Penol

A day trip from Medellin to the El Penol rock and a colourful town on a reservoir shore. Tickets, bus times and taxis are best checked in advance. Coverage is good, but on the way back in peak traffic internet helps you choose transport and return on time.

Cali and the Cauca Valley

The salsa capital and a large city in the south-west. You need internet for night taxi rides, finding dance schools and clubs, and talking to apartment hosts. Cali is lower and warmer than Bogota, so a phone heats up faster in the sun, and it pays to save battery.

Villa de Leyva and Zipaquira

A colonial village with a huge cobbled square, and the salt cathedral at Zipaquira, not far from Bogota. These are popular weekend trips where you need a map, bus times and a restaurant booking. Signal in the towns is usually fine and weaker in the surrounding valleys.

San Andres and Providencia

Colombian islands in the Caribbean, closer to Nicaragua than to the mainland. This is a separate destination: you fly here from Bogota or Cartagena, and coverage and plans may differ from the mainland, so check the plan page. Internet helps with booking boat trips and snorkelling.

Leticia and the Amazon

A town on the Amazon reached by plane or by river, with villages and boat routes around it. Outside town the connection is unreliable, so keep bookings and guide contacts to hand offline. Ask your trip organiser for route details.

Barichara and San Gil

A white colonial town and an adventure-tourism centre in the northern Andes: the Chicamocha Canyon, rafting, paragliding. The road is long and mountainous, and signal drops in places. Check bus times and book excursions in town, where internet is more reliable.

Useful apps for a trip to Colombia

These are the apps that most often come in handy when travelling around the country.

Google Maps

Works well in cities and on main roads, showing public transport, reviews and opening hours. Download an offline map before mountain routes and in the coffee region.

Uber

Works in Colombia's larger cities. The price is shown in advance and the driver sees the address on the map. Make sure your account has a payment method that works for trips abroad.

inDrive

Taxi

A service where you can propose the ride price yourself. It is widely used in Colombia, and in the evening or when leaving the airport it is handy to compare driver offers.

Rappi

Delivery

A Colombian delivery service for food, groceries and other goods, widely used in the larger cities. Useful if you come back late or want groceries delivered to your apartment.

WhatsApp

Messenger

The main way to reach hosts, guides and drivers. It is easy to send a location, a booking photo or a voice message when there is no time to type.

Google Translate

Practical facts about Colombia

Currency
The Colombian peso (COP). Cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shopping centres in the cities, but cash is needed at markets, in small villages and on buses.
Sockets
Types A and B sockets, 110 V, 60 Hz. Chargers from Kazakhstan work with an adapter, and it is worth checking the voltage rating on the device itself.
Emergency
The single emergency number is 123. Save it and your accommodation address in your phone, and in mountain and remote areas tell someone your route.
Time difference
Colombia is 10 hours behind Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 02:00 in Bogota. The country does not switch to summer time.
Language
The official language is Spanish. Tourist hotels and hostels have English speakers, and elsewhere a translator and a few simple phrases come in handy.
Altitude and climate
Colombia spans several climate zones: the coast is hot and humid, and the mountains are much cooler. Bring layers and sun protection.
Transport
Distances between regions are large, so domestic flights are more convenient than buses. Check tickets and baggage rules with the carrier in advance.
Wi-Fi
Hotels and cafes usually have Wi-Fi, but it can be unstable. For banking apps and payments, use mobile data.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Colombia

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can see this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Colombia plan above and pay by card on the site. No passport is needed to buy. If you are also visiting neighbouring countries, look at the regional plans.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while you still have Wi-Fi. Do not leave it until a connecting airport.

  4. After landing, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for that line.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. You can share internet with a laptop on plans that allow hotspot, check the plan page.

Before heading to the mountains, the Tayrona coast or the Amazon, download maps and save bookings offline: on such routes signal can disappear for long stretches.
