About this eSIM

People usually choose Cyprus for a beach holiday, but a trip quickly goes beyond the hotel: a rental car, mountain villages, taxis between resorts, and bookings for tables and beach clubs. Most flights land in Larnaca or Paphos, and you want internet in the arrivals hall already. An eSIM is installed at home in advance, so on the island you only switch data on.

Buy an eSIM or SIM card for Cyprus

You can buy an eSIM for Cyprus online right on this page from 3 500 ₸: choose a data plan, pay by card and get the QR code within minutes. An eSIM is a digital SIM card — it installs on your phone with no plastic card and no visit to a phone shop.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Nicosia and the rest of the country.

Roaming in Cyprus with a Kazakh carrier is usually far more expensive, and roaming data runs out fast. With a Funsim eSIM you pay a fixed price for a data package and keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank SMS — roaming on it can stay off.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Cyprus at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Cyprus

The island is small, but the resorts are spread along the coast, and many holidaymakers visit several towns in a week. One Cyprus profile covers the whole route, and you do not swap SIM cards between Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos. Terms and data amounts are in the plans above, and the coverage of a plan is on its page.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while internet goes through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS, so messengers are the easiest way to reach landlords, car rental staff and tour organisers. It also helps anyone who checks work email on holiday.

Where an eSIM helps most in Cyprus

Resorts and main roads are well covered, while in the mountains and on empty stretches of coast connectivity is less predictable. These are the places where you will use the internet most.

Larnaca and the airport

One of the island's two main airports. Many people land in the evening or at night and immediately need a taxi, transfer confirmation and contact with the host. If you rent a car, a map and the rental company's app help in the arrivals hall. The town suits the first days: the promenade, cafes and short trips to the salt lake.

Ayia Napa and Protaras

Beach resorts in the south-east where people spend their time on sand and water. You need the internet for beach club and boat trip bookings, taxis and finding restaurants. In the evening Ayia Napa's centre is crowded and public Wi-Fi may be overloaded, so mobile data is more reliable.

Limassol

The liveliest resort city, with a promenade, a marina and plenty of cafes. Many people combine a holiday here with remote work, so steady internet, video calls and a hotspot matter. For calls with colleagues choose a package with some margin and check whether hotspot is allowed.

Paphos

A western resort with an archaeological park, a harbour and beaches, and the island's second airport. The sights are spread around town, so a map and a taxi app are handy. If you rent a car, remember that traffic drives on the left and study the route in your navigator in advance.

Nicosia

The capital in the middle of the island, usually visited as a day trip from the coastal towns. You need a map of the old town, museum tickets, bus timetables and taxis. The walking area is compact but the lanes are confusing, so a navigator saves time, especially in the hot hours.

Troodos and the mountain villages

A mountain massif with monasteries, forests and villages such as Omodos and Kakopetria. On the switchbacks and in the gorges signal can briefly drop, so download the navigator for offline use. Check monastery hours and fuel along the route beforehand, because villages close earlier than the coast.

Akamas and Lara

A protected area north-west of Paphos with trails, coves and turtle beaches. The roads are partly unpaved, and signal on empty stretches is unstable. Download an offline map and tell family or your host your route, especially if you hike on a hot day.

Cape Greco

A national park in the south-east near Ayia Napa and Protaras, known for cliffs, sea caves and coastal trails. A trail map and the weather forecast are useful here, and inside the park signal can be weaker than in town. Take water and keep 112 saved in your phone.

Useful apps for a trip to Cyprus

Familiar services work as at home, and a few apps are especially handy for resorts and car rental.

Google Maps

Navigation

Good for drives, walking routes and finding beaches, cafes and petrol stations. Before heading into the mountains or to remote beaches, download an offline map of the region.

Bolt

Taxi

Taxi hailing in the larger cities, with the price shown before the ride. Suits evening trips between the centre and the beach when you would rather not drive. In small villages there are fewer cars.

Wolt

Food delivery

Food and grocery delivery in towns and resorts. Handy for a late dinner or breakfast in your apartment. The list of venues depends on the area.

Google Translate

Translation

Useful for Greek signs, menus and road signs, although English is understood in most places on the island. Download Greek for offline use.

WhatsApp and Telegram

Messengers

This is how you reach landlords, car rental staff and tour organisers. Since most plans have no voice calls, calling through a messenger is the easiest option.

Booking

Accommodation

Stores your reservation confirmations, addresses and host contacts. Save them in advance so you can show them at check-in without internet, and check how to find the right entrance.

Practical facts about Cyprus

Currency
The euro. Bank cards are accepted in most hotels, shops and restaurants, but in small tavernas, mountain villages and beach kiosks cash is useful.
Sockets
Cyprus uses type G sockets, as in the United Kingdom, 230 V, 50 Hz. Chargers from Kazakhstan need an adapter.
Emergency
The single emergency number is 112. Save the address of your accommodation and a point on the map before walking in the mountains or to remote beaches.
Time difference
Cyprus uses Eastern European Time with a summer change. The difference with Kazakhstan is 3 hours in winter and 2 hours in summer.
Language
The main language is Greek. In hotels, restaurants and shops people speak English freely, and Russian can also often be heard in the resorts.
Driving and car rental
Traffic in Cyprus drives on the left. If you rent a car, check the insurance terms in advance and save the rental company's contacts in a messenger.
Public transport
Buses run between towns, but less often than in larger European countries, especially in the evening. Many people use taxis or a rental car, and it is best to check timetables in advance.
Heat and water
Summers on the island are hot, so take water and a hat when you head to the mountains or trails. Many holidaymakers do not drink tap water because of the taste and buy bottled water.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Cyprus

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can find this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Cyprus plan above and pay by card on the site. No passport is needed, and the coverage of a plan is on its page.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while you still have Wi-Fi. That way the internet works right after landing in Larnaca or Paphos.

  4. After landing, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for that line.

  5. Keep your main SIM on for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. The laptop hotspot works on plans that allow it, check the plan page for the terms.

If you plan to work remotely, take a package with some margin and make a test video call on the very first evening, while you can still change location or top up.
