About this eSIM

Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean where resorts are spread along the whole coast, and the ride from the airport to your hotel can take an hour. Taxis, transfers, a dinner booking outside the hotel and messages to a dive centre all need internet as soon as you land. The journey from Kazakhstan usually involves a connection, so it is easier to install the eSIM at home than to buy a SIM after a long flight.

Where to buy an eSIM and SIM card for Mauritius

This page is the quickest way to buy a travel eSIM for Mauritius from 7 500 ₸. Pick a plan, pay online and install the digital SIM card at home before the flight — no passport and no queue at an airport kiosk.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Port Louis and the rest of the country.

Compared with roaming in Mauritius, an eSIM is usually much cheaper for mobile data: the price of the package is fixed and known in advance. Your home number stays active on the main SIM for calls and SMS.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Mauritius at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM suits Mauritius

The island is small, and in one trip it is easy to change two or three areas: a couple of nights in the north, then the south-west or the east. One profile for the whole island saves you from looking for signal every time you change hotels. Rodrigues is a separate island of the republic, and plans for it may be listed separately, so check the plan page.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while mobile data runs through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS, so messengers are the easiest way to reach drivers, guides and dive centres, and many of them answer there.

Where an eSIM helps in Mauritius

The island is small, but signal depends noticeably on the spot: in towns and resort villages it is steady, while on boats, in coves and at mountain viewpoints it is weaker. These are the places where you will use data most.

Port Louis

The capital in the north-west of the island, with the Caudan Waterfront, the Central Market and Fort Adelaide. The city is noisy and congested at rush hour. You need the phone for taxis, market opening hours and translating names in French. Signal in the centre is steady, so it is a good place to sort out tickets and bookings.

Grand Baie, Pamplemousses and the north

Grand Baie is the main tourist village of the north, with restaurants, shops and boats to nearby islands. Close by are the Pamplemousses botanical garden and Cap Malheureux with its red-roofed chapel. You need internet to book dinners and taxis and to check excursion times. Signal in the north is usually steady.

Flic en Flac and the west

A long beach, sunsets and dinners on the shore are the main reasons to stay in the west. From here it is easy to reach Casela park and Tamarin. Signal in the village is steady, but in beachfront cafes and restaurants Wi-Fi is often overloaded in the evening, so mobile data is more reliable for maps and taxis.

The east: Belle Mare and Ile aux Cerfs

The east has long beaches and the lagoon at Trou d'Eau Douce, where boats run to Ile aux Cerfs with its beaches and golf course. There is signal in the hotels, but on the boat between shore and island it can weaken. It helps to save photos of tickets and the boatman's contact in advance and leave uploading photos until you are back.

Mahebourg, Blue Bay and the south-east

Mahebourg is an old town in the south-east with a museum and a market, and nearby is the Blue Bay marine park, where people go snorkelling. The airport is also in this part of the island. You need internet for transfers, maps and weather checks, and on the water it is best to keep the phone in a waterproof case.

Curepipe, Trou aux Cerfs and Grand Bassin

The centre of the island is higher and cooler than the coast, with more mist and rain. In Curepipe there is the Trou aux Cerfs crater with views over the area, and in the hills lies the sacred Hindu lake of Grand Bassin. Signal in the towns is steady but can weaken at viewpoints and on the roads between them, so download the map in advance.

Rodrigues

Rodrigues is a separate island east of Mauritius, an autonomous part of the country, reached by air. It is quiet, with few tourists and many walks and boat trips. Plans for it may be listed separately or among regional plans, so check the plan page before buying.

Useful apps for a trip to Mauritius

Most familiar services work as they do at home. These are the ones that help on the island.

Google Maps

Navigation

Good for driving routes, finding restaurants and beaches and checking travel time. Traffic around Port Louis is slow at rush hour, and the app helps you pick a detour.

Organic Maps

Offline maps

Works without internet, which helps in the hills, on the south coast and wherever signal drops. Download the island map in advance while you have Wi-Fi.

Windy

Wind and waves

Shows wind, waves and rain. Useful before a boat trip, a dive or kitesurfing, when conditions decide whether the activity goes ahead.

Google Translate

Translation

Handy when a menu or sign is only in French. Download French for offline use and translate text with the camera.

WhatsApp

Messenger

The way to reach hosts, drivers, dive centres and guides. Since most plans have no voice calls, calling home through a messenger is also easiest.

Booking.com

Accommodation

Hotel and apartment bookings and messages with hosts. Handy if you decide to change area or stay a couple of nights longer.

Practical facts about Mauritius

Currency
The Mauritian rupee (MUR). Bank cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and shopping centres, while cash is useful at markets, in small shops and on buses.
Sockets
230 V, 50 Hz. European plugs fit, but many hotels have British type G sockets, so bring an adapter.
Emergency
The police answer on 999. Save the ambulance number and the address of your accommodation in advance, and ask the hotel whom to contact if needed.
Time difference
Mauritius is 1 hour behind Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 11:00 on the island. The country does not switch to summer time.
Language
English and French are widely used, and Mauritian Creole is spoken in daily life. Hotels and excursions work in English, while menus and signs are often in French.
Driving and transport
Traffic drives on the left. Buses run between areas but are slow, and from the airport to the hotel it is easier to book a transfer in advance. If you hire a car, check the rental and insurance terms with the company.
Climate
The climate is tropical. The cyclone season usually runs from November to April, and during that time follow the weather service forecast and your hotel's messages.
Wi-Fi
Hotels usually have Wi-Fi, but the beach, boats and coves do not. For banking apps, use mobile data rather than open networks.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Mauritius

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can find this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Mauritius plan above and pay by card on the site, no passport is needed. If your route includes other countries, look at the regional plans.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, with the Quick install button or manually while you still have home Wi-Fi.

  4. If your flight has a connection, do not switch on mobile data for the eSIM until you land in Mauritius, so the package is not used up on the way.

  5. After landing, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for that line. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off data on it.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. A hotspot for a laptop is available on plans that allow it, check the plan page for the terms.

Post holiday photos and video over hotel Wi-Fi: turn off cloud auto-upload on mobile data, and the package will cover maps, messages and taxis.
