About this eSIM

Sweden stretches almost fifteen hundred kilometres from south to north, and trips here can be very different: a city weekend in Stockholm, northern lights near Kiruna, a cycling holiday on Gotland or a route through Dalarna. Everywhere you need maps, forecasts and contact with your hosts, and in sparsely populated areas being offline is especially uncomfortable. An eSIM is easy to install at home and switch on right after landing.

Where to buy an eSIM and SIM card for Sweden

You can buy an eSIM for Sweden online right on this page from 3 500 ₸: choose a data plan, pay by card and get the QR code within minutes. An eSIM is a digital SIM card — it installs on your phone with no plastic card and no visit to a phone shop.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Stockholm and the rest of the country.

Roaming in Sweden with a Kazakh carrier is usually far more expensive, and roaming data runs out fast. With a Funsim eSIM you pay a fixed price for a data package and keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank SMS — roaming on it can stay off.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Sweden at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Sweden

Distances in Sweden are large, and a route is often built from several parts: a plane or night train north, a rental car in the south, a ferry to an island. Changing SIM cards at each stage is awkward, and one profile for the whole country solves it. See the plans above for data amounts and terms, and if you are also going to neighbouring Nordic countries, look at the regional plans.

Keep your main SIM in the phone for calls and bank SMS, and let mobile data run through the eSIM. Most plans include no voice or SMS, so contacting cabin hosts, guides and transfer drivers is easier through messengers. That is especially practical when you check in to a country house with no reception desk.

Where an eSIM helps in Sweden

Cities, suburbs and main roads are well covered, but in the north, in forests and on national trails signal is less predictable. These are the destinations where you will use the internet most.

Kiruna, Abisko and the northern lights

Northern Lapland attracts people who come for the aurora, a night in an ice hotel and dog sledding. Cloud forecasts, tour start times and contact with your guide are easy to check on the phone. Away from the settlements signal can disappear, so do not count on it on a snowy road and save an offline map in advance.

The Kungsleden trail

The famous northern route from Abisko through the national parks of northern Lapland. People hike it with tents or stay in mountain huts, and outside the stations there is almost no signal. You need internet before you set out for hut bookings, the forecast and payments, and on the trail the phone is best used as a map and a camera.

Gotland and Visby

An island in the Baltic Sea with the walled town of Visby, a UNESCO site, and long beaches. You reach it by ferry from the mainland, so it is handy to check sailings and bookings in advance. On the island, by bike or car, you need internet for maps, rentals and restaurant bookings in summer, when cafe tables are scarce.

Öland and the bridge to the mainland

A long island in the south-east with windmills and the Alvar nature zone, linked to the mainland by one of the longest bridges in Europe. It is easy to get around by car or bike, and internet helps with maps and finding campsites. On open stretches signal is usually even, but away from the roads it can be weaker.

Dalarna and Lake Siljan

A region in the centre of the country known for red wooden houses, midsummer celebrations and the Sälen ski resort. In winter and summer people drive between lakes and villages, and internet helps with maps, bookings and road conditions. In forested areas signal may briefly drop, so keep your route in an offline map.

Uppsala and Sigtuna

The university city and ancient Sigtuna are not far from Stockholm and often make a day trip. You need train times, a map and tickets for museums or cathedrals. Signal here is steady, but it is better to check timetables before leaving than on the platform if plans change.

Småland and the Kingdom of Crystal

A forest region in the south with famous glassworks, where many people rent lakeside cabins in summer. The roads between villages wind and signs are not everywhere, so you need navigation. For cabins with no manager, a phone and messenger help you get the door code and arrange check-in.

Night trains to the north

Night trains run from Stockholm northwards, carrying tourists to Lapland and passing through sparsely populated areas. It is easier to keep tickets and timetables in the phone, and signal on some stretches can weaken. If you need to send important messages, do it before departure or at a large station.

Useful apps for a trip to Sweden

Many services work as at home, but a few apps are particularly useful in Sweden.

Google Maps

Navigation

Good for routes by car, on foot and by public transport. Before heading north or to an island, download offline maps, since in sparsely populated areas signal can be weak.

SJ

Trains

The app of the national rail operator, used to buy tickets and check timetables, including night trains. The ticket lives in the phone rather than on paper, so it is better to download it before you leave.

Bolt

Taxi

One of the ride-hailing services in larger cities. The price is shown in advance and the driver sees the address on the map, which helps if you do not speak Swedish. Outside big cities there may be few cars.

SMHI

Weather

The Swedish meteorological service's app with forecasts and warnings. Especially useful in winter in the north and on hikes, when the weather changes fast.

Booking

Accommodation

Helps you find hotels, apartments and cabins. Save the confirmation and the host's contacts in the phone, because country houses may have no manager on site.

Google Translate

Translation

Swedish signs, instructions and menus are easy to read with the camera. Download Swedish for offline use so you can translate even with poor signal.

WhatsApp and Telegram

Messengers

A convenient way to agree things with hosts, guides and drivers. Most plans have no voice calls, so calling through a messenger is easier.

Practical facts about Sweden

Currency
The Swedish krona (SEK). The euro is not used in Sweden, and bank cards are accepted almost everywhere, including small cafes and petrol stations.
Sockets
European sockets of types C and F, 230 V, 50 Hz. Chargers from Kazakhstan usually fit without an adapter.
Emergency
The single number 112 works across the country. Before a trip to the north, save your accommodation address and the name of the nearest settlement.
Time difference
In winter Sweden is four hours behind Kazakhstan, in summer three, because the country switches to summer time and Kazakhstan does not.
Language
The official language is Swedish. Almost everyone knows English, so communication in cities and at tourist lodges is usually easy.
Right of public access
Sweden follows the principle of everyman's right: you may walk through forests and fields and camp briefly if you follow the rules. Check restrictions for a specific area and for national parks.
Long days and nights
In summer the sun barely sets in the north, and in winter there is very little daylight. Take this into account when planning transfers and excursions.
Alcohol
Strong drinks are sold in the state-run Systembolaget stores, which have limited opening hours. Low-alcohol drinks are sold in ordinary shops.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Sweden

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can find this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Sweden plan on the page and pay online by card. No passport is needed to buy.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while Wi-Fi is available.

  4. After landing in Sweden, select the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for it.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn mobile data off on it so you do not pay for roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. Sharing internet with a laptop is available on plans where hotspot is allowed.

If you are heading north, to Dalarna or to an island, download offline maps and save addresses and access codes for your accommodation before leaving: outside the cities signal can be weaker.
