About this eSIM

Argentina is huge, from the subtropics in the north to glaciers and Tierra del Fuego in the south, and a trip almost always involves flights or long bus rides. Landing in Buenos Aires, taking a taxi, booking a room, buying domestic flight tickets and messaging hosts all need internet within the first hours. An eSIM is installed at home in advance, so after landing you only switch mobile data on.

Where to buy an eSIM and SIM card for Argentina

This page is the quickest way to buy a travel eSIM for Argentina from 6 500 ₸. Pick a plan, pay online and install the digital SIM card at home before the flight — no passport and no queue at an airport kiosk.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Buenos Aires and the rest of the country.

Compared with roaming in Argentina, an eSIM is usually much cheaper for mobile data: the price of the package is fixed and known in advance. Your home number stays active on the main SIM for calls and SMS.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Argentina at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM suits Argentina

Routes across the country are made of long legs: Buenos Aires, then Mendoza or Salta, then Patagonia or the Lake District. Swapping a card at every stage is a hassle, while one profile for the country lets you stop thinking about connectivity at each flight. See the plans above for terms and data amounts; if you go on to neighboring South American countries, look at the regional plans.

Internet is needed for many small things: checking in for a domestic flight, finding the bus terminal, writing to a transfer driver, translating a menu, ordering delivery. Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS, and in Argentina almost everything is arranged over WhatsApp, so this is not a problem.

Where an eSIM helps in Argentina

Cities are covered well, while on Patagonian highways, in the mountains and in national parks the signal can disappear for a long time. Here are the destinations where data is needed most often.

Buenos Aires and its airports

International flights arrive at Ezeiza, while some domestic flights leave from Aeroparque, so it helps to check in advance where your next plane departs. Data is needed for taxis, the metro and buses, dinner reservations and translation. In Palermo, Recoleta and San Telmo visitors walk a lot, and a map on the phone saves energy.

Mendoza and the wineries

A wine region at the foot of the Andes. Many people rent a car or a bike and travel between bodegas, so a map and tasting bookings through a messenger are useful every day. In the foothills and on mountain roads toward the passes the signal can weaken, so download an offline map in advance.

Salta and Jujuy

The north of the country, with red rocks, gorges and high-altitude villages. Towns are covered, but on the roads between them and in the Quebrada de Humahuaca the signal can be weak. Here it helps to have bookings, your driver's contact and an offline map saved in advance, and to check altitude and weather the day before.

Iguazu

A national park with waterfalls in the northeast, reached from the town of Puerto Iguazu. Data is useful for tickets, bus timetables and contact with your guide. Inside the park the signal can be uneven, so save tickets and contacts beforehand.

Bariloche and the Lake District

A ski and lake region in western Patagonia. In summer people come for trekking and lakes, in winter for skiing. The signal is stable in town but drops on mountain trails and roads around the lakes. Check the forecast and slope conditions on the resort's site or app.

El Calafate and El Chalten

Bases for trips to the Perito Moreno Glacier and Mount Fitz Roy. Distances between the villages and the national parks are large, so data is needed for tickets, bookings, bus timetables and wind forecasts. Do not count on a signal on the trails, and take an offline map.

Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego

The southernmost city in the world, where boats leave for the Beagle Channel and trips go to the national park. There is a signal in town, but beyond it coverage is unpredictable. Book excursions in advance, keep confirmations on your phone and check the weather, because departures are often rescheduled.

Valdes Peninsula

A coast with marine wildlife, reached from Puerto Madryn by car or on a tour. Distances are long, roads cross empty terrain and the signal can be weak. Download an offline map, note your guide's contact and check the wildlife-watching season.

Useful apps for Argentina

Many services in Argentina will feel familiar, but a few apps are especially popular here. Install them at home in advance.

WhatsApp

Messenger

The main way to reach hosts, guides, drivers and restaurants. Many bookings and confirmations happen here rather than by email.

Uber

Taxi

Works in Buenos Aires and other big cities. The price is usually visible before the ride, and you do not need to explain the address in Spanish. If the app is unavailable in a city, use a licensed taxi.

Cabify

Taxi

Another ride service in big cities. Handy as a backup when one app takes long to find a driver or the price is higher.

PedidosYa

Delivery

A popular food and grocery delivery service in Argentina. Convenient after a late arrival when shops are closed. Give your address with the floor and a landmark.

Mercado Pago

Payments

A wallet and payment service used by many residents. It may help a tourist if a venue accepts payment through it. Find out in advance whether you can link your card.

Google Maps

Navigation

Shows routes, public transport and opening hours. For Patagonia and mountain areas download offline maps, because there may be no signal on the highways.

Google Translate

Translation

Helps with menus, signs and conversation. Download Spanish for offline use and point the camera at signs to read them.

Practical facts about Argentina

Currency
The Argentine peso (ARS). Cards are accepted in many shops and restaurants in cities, but cash is needed at markets, in small villages and on the road. Exchange rates and rules can change, so check them before you travel.
Plugs
Plug types C and I, 220 V, 50 Hz. European type C plugs usually fit, and other devices may need an adapter.
Time difference
Argentina is eight hours behind Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 04:00 in Buenos Aires. The country keeps the same time all year.
Language
The official language is Spanish, and in Argentina it sounds distinctive. English is spoken in tourist places but not everywhere, so a translator app is useful.
Distances
Argentina is very large, and roads between regions take many hours. Many people choose domestic flights, while overnight buses suit medium distances. Check timetables and tickets in advance.
Weather
The seasons are the opposite of Kazakhstan's: January is summer here and July is winter. In the south the weather changes quickly even in summer, so dress in layers and check the forecast.
Public transport
In Buenos Aires the metro and buses use the SUBE travel card. Ask at an information desk or your hotel where to buy it and how to top it up.
Emergencies
The emergency number is 911. Save it along with your accommodation address and insurance policy, and tell someone your route before trips to the mountains.
Entry
Check the current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Argentina

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked. You can see this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose an Argentina plan above and pay by card on the site. No passport is needed. If you are also visiting neighboring countries, look at the regional plans.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the quick install button or manually while you have Wi-Fi. Then you will not need to look for a network after a long flight.

  4. After landing in Buenos Aires, select the eSIM as the mobile data line and switch on data roaming for that line.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. Hotspot for a laptop is available in plans where it is allowed; see the conditions on the plan page.

Before heading south or into the mountains, download offline maps and save bookings, tickets and contacts: in Patagonia and on high-altitude roads the signal often drops.
