About this eSIM

Australia suits a city break, long flights between states and road trips along the coast. Cities are well covered, but distances are huge and time zones differ, so you need internet for navigation, bookings and messaging home. It is easy to install an eSIM while still in Kazakhstan, so that after landing you can call a taxi and check the right platform straight away.

Where to buy an eSIM and SIM card for Australia

You can buy an eSIM for Australia online right on this page from 3 500 ₸: choose a data plan, pay by card and get the QR code within minutes. An eSIM is a digital SIM card — it installs on your phone with no plastic card and no visit to a phone shop.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Sydney and Canberra and the rest of the country.

Roaming in Australia with a Kazakh carrier is usually far more expensive, and roaming data runs out fast. With a Funsim eSIM you pay a fixed price for a data package and keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank SMS — roaming on it can stay off.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Australia at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Australia

Few people stay in one Australian city: many fly from Sydney to Melbourne, then to Perth or Brisbane, and some add Tasmania. There is no point buying a separate local SIM at each stage, since one profile works across the country. See the Australia plan above, and if you go on to New Zealand or other countries in the region, look at the regional plans too.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS while data goes through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS, so messengers are best for hosts, car hire companies and family. That is especially handy because of the time difference with Kazakhstan: you can send messages whenever it suits you.

Where an eSIM helps most in Australia

Big cities and popular suburbs are well covered, while national parks, islands and long highways are less predictable. These are the places where you will use the internet most.

Sydney

The country's best-known city: the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, waterfronts and beaches such as Bondi. Navigation on public transport and ferries, taxis and restaurant bookings all come in handy. Fares are usually paid by card or phone, but routes and timetables are best checked online.

Melbourne

A city of cafes, trams, street art and sporting events. The centre is well covered, so internet is for the map, tram times and finding places by reviews. Many people head out from here on day trips, so it is better to save the route offline.

Brisbane and the Gold Coast

Subtropical Brisbane on its river and the beach resort of the Gold Coast to the south. You need internet for maps, taxis, tours and booking activities such as surfing and theme parks. Queensland does not switch to summer time, so the gap with Kazakhstan stays the same all year.

Perth

The most isolated of the big cities, on the west coast. The time difference with Kazakhstan is smaller here than in the east of the country: just 3 hours. Internet helps with the map, taxis, trips to the beaches, to Rottnest Island and to the Swan Valley.

Tasmania

An island south of the mainland with Hobart, national parks and hiking routes. There is signal in towns and on the main roads, but in the mountains and on remote tracks there are dead zones. Download maps, check the weather and tell someone your hiking plan if you go into a park.

Adelaide and Kangaroo Island

Adelaide is a handy base for the Barossa and McLaren Vale wine regions, and a ferry or flight leads to Kangaroo Island. The island is mostly nature and long roads, so save the map and your ferry booking. Signal in rural areas can be weaker.

The Blue Mountains and Canberra

The Blue Mountains west of Sydney, with lookouts and trails, are easy to visit by train or car, while Canberra stands apart as a capital full of museums. In both places internet is needed for timetables and maps. In the valleys of the Blue Mountains signal may briefly drop.

The Whitsundays and Queensland islands

Islands off the Queensland coast are popular for sailing, boat tours and beaches. Jetties usually have signal, but on the water and on uninhabited islands there are gaps. Download bookings, boat timetables and emergency contacts in advance.

Darwin and Kakadu National Park

The tropical north with wetlands and crocodiles. Roads in national parks are long, and outside settlements there may be no signal. Plan your route offline, carry water and check in advance which roads are open in the wet season.

Useful apps for a trip to Australia

Most international services work in Australia, and a few apps are especially handy for getting around the country.

Uber

Taxi

The most familiar way to call a taxi in big cities. The price is shown before the ride and you pay by card. Install it in advance and add a payment card at home.

DiDi

Taxi

Another ride-hailing service operating in Australian cities. It can help if Uber is slow to find a car or you want to compare prices.

Google Maps

Navigation

The main navigator for cities and highways, showing public transport, opening hours and reviews. For long drives, download an offline map of the region.

Uber Eats

Food delivery

Delivery from restaurants and shops in cities. Handy after a late arrival, when nearby shops are already closed.

Booking.com

Accommodation

Hotel and apartment booking across the country. Save confirmations and host contacts so they are on hand if there is no signal.

Google Translate

Translation

People speak English in Australia, but the service helps with strong accents and with reading signs and menus full of local terms.

WhatsApp and Telegram

Messengers

A handy way to reach hosts, car hire companies and guides. Since most plans have no voice calls, it is better to call through a messenger.

Practical facts about Australia

Currency
The Australian dollar (AUD). Contactless payment by card or phone is accepted almost everywhere, cash is rarely needed but is useful in remote places.
Sockets
Type I sockets, 230 V, 50 Hz. European plugs from Kazakhstan will not fit, so you will need an adapter.
Emergency
The emergency number is 000, and 112 also works from a mobile. Save your accommodation address and the name of the nearest town when driving on remote roads.
Time difference
Australia has several time zones. Sydney and Melbourne are 5 hours ahead of Kazakhstan, and 6 hours ahead in the Australian summer, roughly October to April. Perth is 3 hours ahead, and Brisbane is always 5.
Language
English. The local accent and slang can feel unfamiliar at first, but in hotels, cafes and on transport people speak clearly.
Driving
Traffic drives on the left. If you hire a car, practise on quiet streets and remember that kangaroos and other animals often appear on roads at night.
Sun and water
The sun is very strong even on cloudy days, so bring high-SPF sunscreen, a hat and water. Tap water in cities is normally fine to drink.
Tipping
Tipping is not expected in Australia, as staff receive a full wage. You can leave a little for good service, but nobody will anticipate it.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Australia

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can see this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose an Australia plan above and pay by card on the site. No passport is needed to buy.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while you have Wi-Fi. That way you will not need to hunt for Wi-Fi at the airport.

  4. After landing in Sydney, Melbourne or another city, choose the eSIM for mobile data and switch data roaming on for that line.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, and turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. Sharing the connection with a laptop works on plans that allow it, so check the plan page for terms.

If you fly with a connection, install the eSIM before the first flight but switch data on only after landing in Australia.
