- Currency
- The Swiss franc (CHF). Cards are accepted in most hotels, shops and restaurants, but cash is useful in small mountain places. The country is considered expensive, so plan your budget in advance.
- Sockets
- The main socket type here is J, as in Switzerland, at 230 V and 50 Hz. Two-pin type C plugs usually fit, while earthed plugs may not, so bring an adapter.
- Emergency
- The single emergency number is 112. Save it, and before a mountain hike note the address of your accommodation and the nearest settlement on your route.
- Time difference
- In winter Liechtenstein is four hours behind Kazakhstan, and in summer three hours, because the country switches to summer time. When it is noon in Astana, it is 8:00 in Vaduz in winter.
- Language
- The official language is German, and locals speak an Alemannic dialect. English is understood in tourist areas, and signs and timetables are easier to read with a translator.
- Transport
- The main public transport here is buses, which connect the municipalities and the nearest stations in Switzerland and Austria. Check timetables in advance, especially for mountain routes and evening services.
- Wi-Fi
- Hotels, cafes and stations usually have Wi-Fi, but speeds can be unstable. For banking apps and payments, use mobile data rather than open networks.
- Mountains and weather
- Mountain weather changes quickly, so bring warm clothes and check the forecast. For winter trips, find out whether roads and lifts are running, and save an offline map before setting out on a trail.
- Entry
- Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip, including for the country you will travel through.
