About this eSIM

Malta is made of old towns, bays and limestone walls, and on holiday it is easy to jump in a day from Valletta to Mdina and then to a beach in the north. A map, bus timetables, taxi booking and online tickets to the sights are constantly needed at hand. You install the eSIM at home in advance, and after landing you only switch data on.

eSIM, SIM card or roaming in Malta

This page is the quickest way to buy a travel eSIM for Malta from 3 500 ₸. Pick a plan, pay online and install the digital SIM card at home before the flight — no passport and no queue at an airport kiosk.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Valletta and the rest of the country.

Compared with roaming in Malta, an eSIM is usually much cheaper for mobile data: the price of the package is fixed and known in advance. Your home number stays active on the main SIM for calls and SMS.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Malta at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Malta

The island is small, but a trip usually adds up to several points: the harbour, the old capital, the temples in the south, the beaches in the north. One profile for the country covers all these journeys, and you can pick the data amount and validity in the plans above.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while internet goes through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS, so messengers are easier for contacting hosts, boat tour operators and transfer providers. If you continue to other European countries after Malta, look at the regional plans.

Where an eSIM helps most in Malta

The island is small and mostly well covered, but in old towns with narrow lanes and walls signal and GPS behave unevenly. These are the places where you will use the internet most.

Valletta

The capital on a peninsula, with steep streets, bastions and views over the Grand Harbour. The old town is a UNESCO site, and it is best explored with a map. You need internet for navigating between the Barrakka Gardens and the churches, museum opening hours, tickets and booking a table at a small restaurant.

Mdina

The former capital in the centre of the island, nicknamed the Silent City: cars are almost banned and the streets are very narrow. GPS sometimes goes wrong here because of the walls, and it is easy to get lost without a map. Internet helps with tickets, opening hours, a taxi and the bus back, especially in the evening.

The Three Cities

Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua across the Grand Harbour, authentic old quarters with fortifications and quiet waterfronts. A traditional dghajsa boat from Valletta is a handy way to get there. Internet is useful for the map, the route and finding a lunch spot while you stroll the narrow streets.

Sliema to Valletta ferry

The ferry across the creek between Sliema and Valletta saves time and gives a view of both harbours. It runs often during the day. Timetables and boarding points are easier to check in an app, and for the evening return it is best to find the route in advance.

Marsaxlokk

A fishing village in the south-east of the island with bright luzzu boats in the harbour. It is famous for its Sunday fish market. Nearby are St George's Bay and rocky coves. Internet helps with the bus, the map and a table at a fish restaurant, and on Sunday it is best to go early.

Mellieha and Golden Bay

The northern beaches: Mellieha, Golden Bay, Ramla Bay and Irbat Bay. This is the place for a long beach day, and you usually get here by bus. There is normally signal on the beaches, but before you set off save the return bus timetable and check the weather.

Haġar Qim and Mnajdra

Megalithic temples on the south coast, among the oldest on the planet. The Blue Grotto, reached by boat, is nearby. This is an open coastline where signal and weather change fast. Buy tickets in advance and check opening hours on the spot.

Useful apps for a trip to Malta

Most familiar services work as at home. These are the apps that help in Malta in particular.

Tallinja

Transport

Malta's public transport app. It shows bus routes, stops and arrival times. Buses are the main way to reach beaches and temples without a car.

Bolt

Taxi

One of the most familiar ways to call a taxi on the island. The price is shown before the ride and you do not have to explain the address to the driver. Handy for airport runs.

eCabs

Taxi

A Maltese taxi booking service. Useful if another app takes long to find a car or you want to compare prices. Install it and sign up in advance.

Google Maps

Navigation

Shows bus and walking routes and the opening hours of museums and cafes. In old towns download an offline map, because high walls can distort GPS.

WhatsApp and Telegram

Messengers

A convenient way to talk to hosts, dive clubs and boat tour operators. Most plans have no voice calls, so calling through a messenger is simplest.

Booking

Accommodation

Good for finding hotels and apartments in Sliema, St Julian's and Valletta. Keep confirmations and addresses on your phone, not only in your email.

Practical facts about Malta

Currency
The euro. Bank cards are accepted in most shops, cafes and hotels, but at small markets and in minor places cash is handy.
Sockets
Malta uses British type G sockets, 230 V, 50 Hz. Equipment from Kazakhstan needs an adapter.
Emergency
The single emergency number is 112. Save it and your accommodation address, and on the coast and cliffs mark the nearest locality on the map.
Time difference
In winter Malta is 4 hours behind Kazakhstan, and in summer, with daylight saving time, 3 hours behind. When it is noon in Astana, it is 08:00 in Malta in winter.
Language
The official languages are Maltese and English. It is easy to manage in English in hotels, shops and on transport, and many locals also understand Italian.
Traffic
Traffic in Malta drives on the left. This matters for pedestrians too: look right first, then left, and rent a car only if you are confident in your driving.
Transport
The main public transport is buses linking the towns and beaches. Ferries run between Valletta and Sliema, and separate services run to Gozo. Check timetables in advance.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Malta

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can see this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Malta plan above and pay by card on the site, no passport is needed. If you are also visiting other countries, compare the regional plans.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while you have home Wi-Fi.

  4. After landing, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for that line.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. Hotspot is available on most plans, see the plan page for the terms.

Before strolling through the old towns, save an offline map and your accommodation address: narrow streets and high walls sometimes disturb GPS, and a map stored on the phone saves the day.
