About this eSIM

Portugal stretches along the Atlantic, and a trip rarely stays in one city: Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, the coast, and for many people Madeira or the Azores as well. Trams, train tickets, restaurant bookings and menu translation all need internet from the first minutes after landing. You can install an eSIM at home in advance, and in Portugal you only switch data on.

eSIM, SIM card or roaming in Portugal

You can buy an eSIM for Portugal online right on this page from 3 500 ₸: choose a data plan, pay by card and get the QR code within minutes. An eSIM is a digital SIM card — it installs on your phone with no plastic card and no visit to a phone shop.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Lisbon and the rest of the country.

Roaming in Portugal with a Kazakh carrier is usually far more expensive, and roaming data runs out fast. With a Funsim eSIM you pay a fixed price for a data package and keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank SMS — roaming on it can stay off.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Portugal at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Portugal

A Portuguese route is usually a chain of stops: a flight to Lisbon, a train north, a car along the coast. You do not need to buy connectivity separately for each leg, one profile works across the mainland. Plans for the country are listed above. If you continue to Spain or elsewhere in Europe, look at the regional plans too, and for the islands check the plan page.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while mobile data goes through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls, so messengers are the easiest way to reach hosts, guides and transfer drivers.

Where an eSIM helps most in Portugal

Coverage is dense in the cities and along the main roads, while the countryside, remote coastline and islands can hold surprises. These are the places and scenarios where you will use the internet most.

Lisbon

A city of hills, old trams and narrow streets where it is easy to walk the wrong way without a map. You need internet for navigation around Alfama and Chiado, public transport times, taxis and tickets to popular museums and viewpoints. If you stay in an apartment, self check-in often runs through the host's messages.

Sintra and Cascais

The hilltop palaces of Sintra and the seaside town near Lisbon are often combined into one train trip. Buy palace tickets in advance and check opening hours and queues on the day. Signal between stops in the wooded hills can weaken, so it helps to save the route from the station to the palace offline.

Porto and the Douro Valley

The river city is known for its bridges, port wine cellars and steep descents. Internet helps with tasting bookings, taxis and river cruise tickets. If you go deeper into the Douro Valley by train or car, remember that coverage is uneven among the terraced vineyards, so add your address to an offline map beforehand.

Coimbra and Evora

University Coimbra and walled Evora in the Alentejo suit short stops between the big cities. Here the internet is for regional train and bus times, museum opening hours and dinner reservations. Small guesthouses and restaurants often answer only on messengers, not by phone.

Nazare and Peniche

A surfing stretch of the Atlantic with big waves and open beaches. Weather and sea conditions change fast, so keep the forecast and messages from surf schools or hosts close. On long beaches, especially out of season, mobile signal can be weaker than in town.

The Alentejo and the Vicentine Coast

The south-west of Portugal feels almost empty: cork oaks, plains, wild coves and scattered villages. For a trip here you need an offline map, water and fuel in reserve, while mobile internet is a backup and a way to reach your host or car rental. Away from the main roads, signal can disappear for long stretches.

Madeira

An Atlantic island with mountain trails along levadas, viewpoints and the city of Funchal. Weather differs by altitude, and fog in the mountains comes quickly. You need internet for forecasts, maps, booking rooms and contacting a guide. Signal is uneven in the gorges and on trails. Island coverage may belong to separate plans, so check the plan page.

The Azores

Nine volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic: crater lakes, hot springs, whale-watching tours. Flights between islands and ferry schedules depend on weather, so messages from airlines and hosts matter. The Azores run one hour behind the mainland, and island connectivity terms should be checked on the plan page.

Useful apps for a trip to Portugal

Most familiar services work as at home. In Portugal it is worth installing a few city and road apps in advance.

Bolt

Taxi

A handy way to call a car in the larger cities and from the airport. The price is shown before the ride and you do not have to explain the address to a driver in Portuguese.

Uber

Taxi

Works in Lisbon, Porto and other cities. Useful as a backup when Bolt takes long to find a car. Install it and sign in before the trip.

Google Maps

Navigation

Shows routes by car, on foot and by public transport, plus reviews and opening hours. For the Alentejo, Madeira and the Azores, download an offline map first.

Google Translate

Translation

Helps with menus, signs and notices in Portuguese. Download the language for offline use and try camera translation.

Glovo

Delivery

Food and grocery delivery in the larger cities. Handy if you get back to the apartment late or need water and food without hunting for a shop.

Booking.com

Accommodation

The app keeps your bookings, shows the address, lets you message the host and open check-in instructions. In guesthouses and apartments it is often the only contact channel.

WhatsApp

Messenger

The main way to write to a host, a guide or a car rental. Since most plans have no voice calls, calling through it is easiest.

Practical facts about Portugal

Currency
The euro. Bank cards are accepted almost everywhere in the cities, but cash helps in small cafes, markets and villages.
Sockets
European sockets of types C and F, 230 V, 50 Hz. Phones and chargers from Kazakhstan usually need no adapter.
Emergency
The single emergency number 112 works across Portugal. Save your accommodation address in the phone, especially before hikes and coastal drives.
Time difference
On the mainland it is 5 hours behind Kazakhstan in winter and 4 hours in summer, because Portugal changes to summer time. The Azores are one hour behind the mainland.
Language
Portuguese. English is usually spoken in tourist areas and hotels, but less often in small towns, so a translator is useful.
Transport
Trains run between Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto, while for small towns and the coast a bus or car is often easier. In Lisbon and Porto the metro uses a rechargeable card, and it is best to check purchase options and fares on the spot.
Wi-Fi
Hotels and cafes usually have Wi-Fi, but it can be slow and shared by many guests. For payments, banking apps and bookings your own mobile data is more reliable.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Portugal

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can see this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Portugal plan above and pay by card on the site. No passport is needed. If you travel on around Europe, look at the regional plans.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while you have Wi-Fi. You will not need to look for a network at the airport.

  4. After landing in Lisbon, Porto or Faro, select the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data on for it.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. You can share internet with a laptop on plans with hotspot mode, check the terms on the plan page.

If you plan Madeira, the Azores or remote parts of the Alentejo, download offline maps and save your accommodation address in advance: signal can drop, and that is normal.
