About this eSIM

Slovakia is small but very varied: a capital on the Danube, eastern Kosice, the thermal resorts of Liptov, the caves and gorges of Slovak Paradise, castles and medieval towns. Many people drive or take the train here, so navigation, tickets and accommodation bookings must be at hand. You install the eSIM at home in advance, and in Slovakia you only switch data on.

Buy an eSIM or SIM card for Slovakia

You can buy an eSIM for Slovakia online right on this page from 3 500 ₸: choose a data plan, pay by card and get the QR code within minutes. An eSIM is a digital SIM card — it installs on your phone with no plastic card and no visit to a phone shop.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Bratislava and the rest of the country.

Roaming in Slovakia with a Kazakh carrier is usually far more expensive, and roaming data runs out fast. With a Funsim eSIM you pay a fixed price for a data package and keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank SMS — roaming on it can stay off.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Slovakia at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Slovakia

A trip to Slovakia is often a chain of stops: Bratislava, a mountain region and a castle or two on the way. You do not need to buy connectivity separately for each leg, one profile works nationwide. Plans are listed above. If you plan to drop into neighbouring countries such as Austria, Czechia, Hungary or Poland, look at the regional plans.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while mobile data goes through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls, so messengers are the easiest way to reach hosts, guides and transfer drivers.

Where an eSIM helps most in Slovakia

Coverage is usually dense in the cities and along the main roads. In gorges, on mountain trails and in deep valleys it is less predictable. These are the places and scenarios where you will use the internet most.

Bratislava: arrival and evening routes

The capital is small, and the internet matters most at the entrance and exit: from the airport to the centre, from the station to your lodging, in the evening to a restaurant across the Danube. Taxis and public transport tickets are easier to handle in an app, and restaurant and tour bookings are worth checking on the day.

Kosice

The country's second-largest city in the east, with a Gothic cathedral and a long pedestrian main street. Many people arrive by train or plane and stay a couple of days. You need internet for maps, tickets, schedules and restaurant bookings. The city is a handy base for trips to the Slovak Karst and the Spis region.

Poprad and the Spis region

Poprad is a gateway to the mountains, and nearby are Levoca and Spis Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe. Here the internet is for tickets, bus and train times, opening hours and booking rooms. The castle itself stands on a hill, so save the route to it in advance.

The Low Tatras and Jasna

A mountain area with ski slopes in winter and trails in summer, where the peak of Chopok is known for its lifts. You will use the internet for weather forecasts, maps, lift tickets and booking rooms. In the valleys signal is steady, while on upper slopes and trails it can drop. Mountain weather changes fast, so save important details offline.

Slovak Paradise and Dobsina Ice Cave

A national park with steel ladders, gorges and streams. Trails often take half a day, and signal in deep gorges is uneven. Download an offline map and take a screenshot of the route before you set out. Dobsina Ice Cave works by season and tour, so check hours and tickets on the official website beforehand.

Banska Stiavnica and Banska Bystrica

Historic mining towns in central Slovakia. Banska Stiavnica sits on hills among old mine lakes and is a World Heritage site. You need internet for maps, transport times and booking rooms. The streets are steep and narrow, so check in advance where you can leave the car.

Mala Fatra and Orava

Green mountains in the north-west and the area of Orava Castle, which stands on a rock above the river. Trails and viewpoints attract hikers, and routes are easy to share over messengers. Weather changes fast, so keep the forecast and route at hand and download the map offline.

Liptov and thermal aqua parks

A region of thermal springs and large aqua parks near the mountains, popular with families. You need internet for booking rooms and tickets, checking opening hours and session times, and contacting hosts. In high season hotel and cafe Wi-Fi can be overloaded, and your own mobile data is more reliable.

Useful apps for a trip to Slovakia

Most familiar services work as at home. In Slovakia it is worth installing a few apps before the trip.

Bolt

Taxi

A handy way to call a car in Bratislava and other large cities. The price is shown before the ride, you enter the address in the app and can pay by card.

Uber

Taxi

Works in Bratislava. Useful as a backup if Bolt takes long to find a car. Sign in before the trip.

Google Maps

Navigation

Good for routes by car, on foot and by public transport, plus reviews and opening hours. For the mountains and national parks, download an offline map.

Mapy.cz

Maps

An app with detailed hiking and cycling maps, popular in Slovakia and Czechia. Handy to download an area for offline use before a mountain hike.

Wolt

Delivery

Food and grocery delivery in larger cities. Handy if you get back late or do not want to look for an open cafe.

Google Translate

Translation

Helps with Slovak menus, signs and notices. Download the language for offline use and translate text with the camera.

WhatsApp

Messenger

The main way to write to a host, a guide or a driver. Since most plans have no voice calls, calling through it is easiest.

Practical facts about Slovakia

Currency
The euro. Cards are accepted in most shops, restaurants and hotels, while in mountain huts, markets and small guesthouses cash is useful.
Sockets
European sockets of types C and E, 230 V, 50 Hz. Phones and chargers from Kazakhstan usually work without an adapter.
Emergency
The single emergency number is 112. Before a mountain hike, save it and your accommodation address in the phone and leave your route with your host or family.
Time difference
Slovakia is 4 hours behind Kazakhstan in winter and 3 hours in summer, because the country changes to summer time.
Language
Slovak. English is often spoken in tourist places, but signs and menus in small towns can be Slovak only, so a translator is useful.
Transport
Trains and buses run between cities, while to the mountains and castles it is often easier to drive. Motorways have paid-use rules, so check them before heading out in a rental car.
Wi-Fi
Hotels and cafes usually have Wi-Fi, but speeds can be unstable. For banking apps and payments, mobile data is safer than an open network.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Slovakia

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can see this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Slovakia plan above and pay by card on the site. No passport is needed. If your route includes neighbouring countries, look at the regional plans.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while you have Wi-Fi. You will not need to look for a network at the airport.

  4. After landing in Bratislava, Kosice or Poprad, select the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data on for it.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. You can share internet with a laptop on plans with hotspot mode, check the terms on the plan page.

Before a mountain hike or the gorges of Slovak Paradise, download an offline map and save your accommodation address: in narrow valleys signal can drop, and that is normal.
