- Currency
- The Moldovan leu (MDL). Cards are accepted in Chisinau and in most cafes, shops and hotels, but cash is useful in villages, at markets and on minibuses.
- Sockets
- European sockets of types C and F, 230 V, 50 Hz. Phones and chargers from Kazakhstan work without an adapter.
- Emergency
- The single emergency number is 112. Save your accommodation address and mark the nearest town on the map if you drive on rural roads.
- Time difference
- Moldova is 3 hours behind Kazakhstan in winter and 2 hours behind in summer, because the country switches to summer time and Kazakhstan does not.
- Language
- The official language is Romanian. Many people understand Russian, especially in Chisinau, while English is more common among young people and in tourist places.
- Transport
- Buses and minibuses run between towns, and Chisinau has trolleybuses, buses and taxis. It is best to check schedules the day before, especially at weekends.
- Wi-Fi
- Hotels and cafes usually have free Wi-Fi, but for banking apps and payments mobile data is safer than open networks.
- Wine and roads
- If you plan tastings, order a transfer or taxi in advance instead of driving yourself. On rural roads a navigator sometimes leads onto dirt tracks, so ask your hosts about the route.
- Entry
- Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.
