- Currency
- The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). Cash is needed for tuk-tuks, small cafes, markets and bus tickets. ATMs are found in cities and tourist areas but are fewer in the countryside, so do not leave withdrawing money to the last moment.
- Card payments
- Large hotels, restaurants and shops in Colombo and at resorts accept bank cards, but small places, markets and drivers usually want cash. Ask about the payment method in advance. Before heading into the countryside, keep part of your money in cash, and when paying by card check that the terminal shows the final amount in rupees.
- Sockets and voltage
- 230 V, 50 Hz. Sockets of types D, M and G are found, so bring a universal adapter.
- Emergency numbers
- Police 119, ambulance 1990. Save the numbers of your hotel and host, and your accommodation address in English.
- Time difference
- Sri Lanka is 30 minutes ahead of Kazakhstan, and the island does not use daylight saving time.
- Language
- The official languages are Sinhala and Tamil, and English is spoken in tourist places. A simple message in English usually sorts things out with a guide or driver. In more remote villages local languages are more common, so a translator on your phone helps.
- Road traffic
- Traffic drives on the left, and mountain roads are narrow and winding, so distances on the map do not show travel time. Allow extra time for transfers. Trains and buses can run late, and tickets for popular routes are best checked in advance.
- Water and clothing
- Tap water is not recommended for drinking, so buy bottled water. Order ice in drinks only where you are sure of the water quality. Tips are usually left in restaurants if no service charge is included in the bill, and small amounts to guides and drivers. Covered clothing is needed at temples, and shoes come off at the entrance.
