About this eSIM

Algeria is the largest country in Africa by area, and travel here is simple in outline: a Mediterranean north with cities and ruins, then long flights or drives into the interior. In big cities mobile internet is needed for maps, taxis and contact with hosts, and on long routes it is also a way to tell people you are running late. An eSIM is installed at home in advance, so after landing all you have to do is switch data on.

Buy an eSIM or SIM card for Algeria

This page is the quickest way to buy a travel eSIM for Algeria from 4 500 ₸. Pick a plan, pay online and install the digital SIM card at home before the flight — no passport and no queue at an airport kiosk.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage across Algeria.

Compared with roaming in Algeria, an eSIM is usually much cheaper for mobile data: the price of the package is fixed and known in advance. Your home number stays active on the main SIM for calls and SMS.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Algeria at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Algeria

Routes in Algeria usually combine several stops: the capital, the coast, the Roman cities in the east and sometimes a flight to the south. You do not need a separate SIM for each stage, because one profile works across the country. See the plans above for data amounts and terms, and if you are travelling around several Maghreb countries, look at the regional plans.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while the internet runs through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS, so messengers are the easier way to call. That is especially useful when you need to agree quickly with a driver, guide or apartment host in another language.

Where an eSIM helps in Algeria

The north and the big cities are covered best, while on long transfers and in the mountains signal varies. These are the routes where you will use the internet most.

Algiers and the airport

The capital spreads over slopes above the bay: the old Casbah, the basilica of Notre-Dame d'Afrique, the Hamma botanical garden, the waterfront and business districts are at different heights and far apart. The city has a metro and a tram, and you need internet for taxis and finding addresses. It helps if the network already works in the arrivals hall.

Oran

A large port city in the west with wide boulevards, a seafront and the Santa Cruz fortress above the town. It is easy to walk and take taxis here, and mobile internet is needed for maps, booking accommodation and choosing a restaurant. Many people go on from Oran to the coast or further west.

Constantine

A city built on cliffs above the Rhumel gorge and linked by bridges, the best known of which is the Sidi M'Cid bridge. The streets climb steep slopes, and it is easy to get lost without a map. The internet helps with navigation, though in the narrow gorges signal can vary for a moment.

Tipaza

Ancient ruins on the Mediterranean shore not far from the capital, on the UNESCO World Heritage list. People usually come for half a day by taxi or with a guide. You need internet to keep in touch with the driver and check opening times and the way back, and it is handy to download the map of the ruins beforehand.

Djemila and Timgad

Roman cities deep in the east of the country, also on the UNESCO list. The roads cross mountain and steppe areas, and between villages there are long stretches without signal. Download an offline map, save the contacts of your driver and hotel and keep your booking confirmation on your phone.

Ghardaia and the M'zab Valley

A group of ancient towns in a desert valley, known for their unusual architecture and way of life. You usually get there by plane or on a long road from the north. The internet is useful for maps, booking a guide and contacting your guesthouse host, and in the narrow lanes it is best to keep an offline map.

Annaba and Bejaia

Seaside cities in the east with old quarters, beaches and mountains nearby. People usually come from the capital by bus, train or car. You need internet for navigation, booking accommodation and checking timetables. On coastal mountain roads signal can weaken in tunnels and gorges.

Hoggar and Tassili

Mountains and plateaus in the south, visited on organised tours from Tamanrasset or Djanet. This is a separate expedition with its own equipment and a guide, and coverage here is limited. Discuss connectivity with the organiser in advance, download offline maps and agree how you will report that you are back.

Useful apps for a trip to Algeria

Most familiar services work as at home, and a few apps are especially useful here.

Yassir

Taxi and delivery

An Algerian ride-hailing and delivery service popular in the big cities. The price and route are visible before the ride, and you do not have to explain the address to the driver. Install it in advance and check your registration.

Google Maps

Navigation

Shows routes by car, on foot and by public transport. Download offline maps of the cities and regions you are going to, and save hotel addresses as favourite places.

Google Translate

Translation

Needed for signs, menus and conversations in Arabic and French. Download both languages for offline use and translate signs and menus with the camera on the spot.

WhatsApp

Messenger

The main way to reach hosts, guides and transfer drivers. It works over mobile internet, so calls and messages do not need a voice connection.

Booking

Accommodation

Helps you book a hotel or an apartment, though the choice is smaller than in Europe. Keep the confirmation and address on your phone, and agree late check-in in advance by messenger.

Airline app

Flights

Over long distances inside the country many people fly. It is handy to keep the app or confirmation email at hand to check delays and your boarding pass.

Practical facts about Algeria

Currency
The Algerian dinar (DZD). Cash is needed more often than in Europe: cards are not accepted everywhere, especially outside big hotels. Check before the trip whether your card will work, and bring a reserve of cash.
Sockets
European sockets of types C and F, 230 V, 50 Hz. Phones and chargers from Kazakhstan work without an adapter.
Emergency
Emergency numbers differ from country to country. Ask your hotel or trip organiser for the current numbers and save them in your phone along with the address of your accommodation.
Time difference
Algeria is four hours behind Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 08:00 in Algiers. There is no summer time.
Language
The official languages are Arabic and Tamazight, and French is widely used in daily life, business and on signs. In tourist places some people also speak English, but do not count on it.
Climate
The north has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters, while the desert in the south is very hot by day and cool at night. Choose the season for your trip with the region in mind.
Transport
Buses, trains and planes run between cities, and the capital has a metro and a tram. Distances are large, so check timetables in advance and do not plan too tightly.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Algeria

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can see this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose an Algeria plan above and pay by card on the site. No passport is needed to buy, and if you are also visiting neighbouring countries, look at the regional plans.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while you still have Wi-Fi. That way you will not need to look for a network at the airport.

  4. After landing, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for it.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

Before a long transfer between cities, download an offline map of the route and save the address of your accommodation and your driver's contacts: on long stretches the signal can drop.
