About this eSIM

Bahrain is a small island archipelago in the Persian Gulf, where a few days can combine business meetings, shopping, a beach and visits to ancient sites. Taxis, food delivery, restaurant bookings and maps are almost always handled through a smartphone, so you need data from the moment you land. An eSIM installed at home saves you from looking for an operator's shop at the airport.

Buy an eSIM or SIM card for Bahrain

This page is the quickest way to buy a travel eSIM for Bahrain from 4 500 ₸. Pick a plan, pay online and install the digital SIM card at home before the flight — no passport and no queue at an airport kiosk.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Manama and the rest of the country.

Compared with roaming in Bahrain, an eSIM is usually much cheaper for mobile data: the price of the package is fixed and known in advance. Your home number stays active on the main SIM for calls and SMS.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Bahrain at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Bahrain

Bahrain is compact: the main districts are linked by highways and bridges, and many trips on the island take ten to thirty minutes. But a single day can include a meeting, a mall, dinner on the waterfront and an evening on the beach, so you need internet all the time and in many places. One profile covers it all. If your route includes neighbouring Gulf countries, look at the regional plans.

An eSIM needs no queue and no purchase on arrival: you install the profile at home and just switch data on when you land. Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS. Most plans have no voice calls, so messengers are the easiest way to talk to the hotel, a driver and colleagues.

Where an eSIM helps most in Bahrain

The islands are small and coverage in the cities and on the main roads is steady. Here you use the internet less for long excursions and more for everyday city tasks: taxis, bookings, maps and payments.

Manama: Adliya and Seef

Adliya is known for cafes, galleries and restaurants, while Seef has shopping malls and office towers. This is where you book tables, search places by reviews and call taxis. It helps to save venue names and addresses on the map in advance so the driver knows at once where to go.

Manama business district

Many people come to Bahrain for work, and the internet is needed for email, video calls and documents. You can share data with a laptop if the plan allows it. For banking apps, mobile data is more reliable than open Wi-Fi in lobbies and cafes.

Muharraq and the Pearling Path

The old town on Muharraq island with pearl merchants' houses and narrow streets. The Pearling Path is a UNESCO site and suits a slow walk. A map helps you not get lost among the alleys, and it is best to check museum opening hours before you set out.

Bahrain Fort

An archaeological site on the north coast where excavations show layers of different eras. People usually go by taxi or car for half a day. Internet helps with opening hours, tickets and getting back to town, especially if you came without a return taxi.

Zallaq and the western beaches

The coastline and resort hotels on the west of the island. On the beach the phone is for music, photos, food orders and keeping in touch with your group. In the heat mobile data is easier than looking for hotel Wi-Fi: you can sit in the shade and plan the evening.

Amwaj and the resort districts

Artificial islands near Muharraq with promenades, restaurants and waterside homes. People come for dinner or stay in apartments. Maps, food delivery and taxis work here as in any city district, so no separate network is needed.

The Tree of Life and the southern desert

A lone tree amid sand and rocky terrain around Jebel Dukhan. It is a short trip from the city, but there are few landmarks around. Save the point on an offline map, bring water and keep your phone charged: in summer heat the battery drains fast.

Al Areen and the reserve areas

A wildlife reserve in the south with open enclosures for desert animals. It suits a family trip of a few hours. Tickets, opening hours and the route are easy to check on your phone, and on site mobile internet helps you stay in touch and order a taxi back.

Useful apps for a trip to Bahrain

Most familiar services work as at home, and a few apps are especially popular in Bahrain.

Careem

Taxi

A regional service used in Gulf cities and in Bahrain. It shows the route and fare, and you can pay by card. Install it in advance and check that signing in with your main SIM number works.

Talabat

Food delivery

A popular delivery service for restaurants and shops. Handy in the evening when you do not feel like leaving the hotel in the heat. Give the address with the hotel name and room number.

Google Maps

Navigation

Works well on the islands: routes, traffic, opening hours and reviews. Save your hotel and key places as favourites and download an offline map of the area.

Google Translate

Translation

Arabic is used on signs and documents, although English is very widespread. The camera translates inscriptions, and a downloaded language works without a network.

WhatsApp

Messenger

This is how you reach the hotel, transfers, colleagues and guides. Calls go over the internet, so you do not need voice calls in the plan.

Booking.com

Accommodation

Good for finding hotels and apartments and chatting with hosts. Keep the booking confirmation and address in the app and in your phone notes.

Practical facts about Bahrain

Currency
The Bahraini dinar (BHD). Cards are accepted in hotels, malls and most restaurants, while small purchases in markets and shops are easier in cash.
Sockets
Mostly British type G sockets, 230 V, 50 Hz. Equipment from Kazakhstan needs an adapter, while phone and laptop chargers are usually built for this voltage.
Emergency
The single emergency number is 999. Save it and your accommodation address in your phone, and show the driver the address on the map in a taxi.
Time difference
Bahrain is on UTC+3 all year. The difference with Kazakhstan is two hours: when it is noon in Astana, it is 10:00 in Manama. There is no summer time.
Language
The official language is Arabic, but English is very common in hotels, shops and restaurants. You may meet Russian-speaking staff, but do not count on it.
Working week
The weekend is usually Friday and Saturday, and the working week runs from Sunday to Thursday. On Friday some offices are closed and many places open later, so check opening hours on the map.
Heat and clothing
Summers are very hot and humid, so by day it is best to move by taxi or indoors. Modest clothing suits mosques and traditional quarters, while hotel beaches have simpler rules.
Ramadan
During Ramadan the opening hours of cafes and shops change: some venues are closed or limited by day and come alive in the evening. Check the schedule before the trip and before leaving the hotel.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Bahrain

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can see this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Bahrain plan above and pay by card on the site, no passport is needed. If you are also visiting neighbouring Gulf countries, look at the regional plans.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while Wi-Fi is available.

  4. After landing, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for that line only.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. Check the plan page for hotspot use with a laptop.

In summer do not leave your phone in the sun or in a closed car: heat can slow it down and switch off mobile data until it cools.
