- Currency
- The Iraqi dinar (IQD). Cash is needed almost everywhere, and cards are mostly accepted in large hotels and shopping centres. In some places US dollars are also used, but it is best to ask in advance.
- Sockets
- Sockets of types C, D and G are used, 230 V, 50 Hz. Chargers from Kazakhstan may need an adapter, especially in hotels with British-style sockets.
- Time difference
- Iraq is 2 hours behind Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 10:00 in Baghdad. The country does not switch to summer time.
- Language
- The official languages are Arabic and Kurdish, and in the north Kurdish is heard especially often. English is usually spoken in hotels and business centres, and Arabic signs are easier to read with a translator.
- Emergency numbers
- Before the trip, ask your hotel or trip organisers for emergency numbers and save them with your accommodation address in your phone.
- Transport
- Between cities people travel by car with a driver, by bus, and over long distances by domestic flights. Taxis and transfers are easier to arrange through the hotel or organisers.
- Clothing
- In religious cities and mosques modest clothing with covered shoulders and knees is expected, and women usually need a headscarf. Light clothes suit the hot summer, and winters can be cooler.
- Wi-Fi
- Hotels usually have Wi-Fi, but speeds can be unstable. For banking apps and work tasks it is better to have mobile internet as a backup.
- Before you go
- Before the trip, check current travel advisories and entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan.
