About this eSIM

Qatar is compact: it is about a quarter of an hour by car from Hamad airport to central Doha, and most of what visitors come for lies within a day's reach. That is why you need internet right on arrival: to order a taxi, find your hotel in Msheireb, buy a metro or museum ticket. The eSIM is installed at home, and after landing all you do is switch data on, without hunting for a phone shop.

Buy an eSIM or SIM card for Qatar

This page is the quickest way to buy a travel eSIM for Qatar from 4 500 ₸. Pick a plan, pay online and install the digital SIM card at home before the flight — no passport and no queue at an airport kiosk.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Doha and the rest of the country.

Compared with roaming in Qatar, an eSIM is usually much cheaper for mobile data: the price of the package is fixed and known in advance. Your home number stays active on the main SIM for calls and SMS.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Qatar at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Qatar

Many people come to Qatar for a few days: a stopover on the way to Asia, a business trip or a short break in Doha. On such trips you do not want to buy a local SIM, and roaming is usually much more expensive. See the plans above for Qatar, and if your route includes other Gulf countries, look at the regional plans.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while mobile data goes through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS. In the Gulf countries calls through some messengers can be restricted, so agree on important conversations in advance; text messages and data work as usual.

Where an eSIM helps most in Qatar

Mobile coverage is solid in the cities and along the main roads, but weaker outside built-up areas, in the desert and along the coast. These are the places where you will use the internet most.

Hamad airport

One of the region's major transit hubs. If you are only changing planes, airport Wi-Fi is enough, but once you head into the city you need internet at once: taxi, map, hotel booking. Install the eSIM in advance and switch data on after landing so you do not have to look for a network at the exit.

Doha and the Corniche

A waterfront walk with views of the West Bay skyscrapers and the Museum of Islamic Art. A map, taxis and cafe search come in handy here. In the hot months people walk in the evening and spend the day between air-conditioned places, so it helps to order a car from the app.

Souq Waqif and Msheireb

The old market with narrow lanes and a modern district next to it. You need internet to navigate the maze of alleys, translate menus, book tables and check museum hours. The Msheireb metro and tram are easy to plan on a map without guessing routes on the go.

Lusail

A new city north of Doha with a boulevard, a marina and a stadium. People come for dinner, a stroll and events, and taxis and tickets are arranged on the phone. If you have evening events planned, download tickets and save your hotel address in advance.

The Pearl and Katara

An artificial island with yachts and restaurants, and a cultural village on the shore with an amphitheatre and a beach. Both places are spread out, and getting between them is easier with a phone: a map, a taxi and messages to the people meeting you.

Education City and museums

The National Museum of Qatar, shaped like a desert rose, and other museums run to schedules that are best checked in advance. Mobile internet helps you check opening hours, buy a ticket online and call a taxi as closing time approaches.

The desert and the Inland Sea

Day trips by jeep to the Mesaieed dunes and Khor Al Adaid bay go off-road, where signal weakens. The organiser leads the route, so you need internet before departure and after you return; in the dunes rely on your guide and agree on a meeting point in advance.

Al Wakrah and Al Zubarah

A coastal town with a souq and an old harbour south of Doha, and an ancient fort in the north-west of the country. These are half-day trips by car or on a tour where a map and your driver's contact matter. Away from residential areas the signal can weaken, so save points on an offline map.

Useful apps for a trip to Qatar

Most services work as at home, but a few apps are especially common in Qatar.

Uber

Taxi

One of the most familiar ways to call a car in Doha and from the airport. The price and route are visible before the ride, and you do not have to explain the address to the driver.

Careem

Taxi

A regional ride-hailing and delivery service that also works in Qatar. Useful as a second option if Uber has no cars nearby. Register in advance.

Talabat

Food delivery

A popular food and grocery delivery service in the Gulf countries. Handy for ordering dinner to the hotel after a late arrival or on a hot day.

Google Maps

Navigation

Shows routes, public transport, opening hours and reviews. For a trip into the desert, save an offline map of the area.

Google Translate

Translation

Arabic signs and menus are easier to understand with the translator's camera. Download Arabic in advance for offline use.

WhatsApp

Messenger

The main way to agree things with hosts, guides and drivers. Calls may be restricted, so settle important questions in text.

Practical facts about Qatar

Currency
The Qatari riyal (QAR). Bank cards are accepted almost everywhere in Doha: in shops, cafes, hotels and taxis. A small amount of cash is handy at the souqs.
Sockets
Type G sockets, 240 V, 50 Hz. Kazakhstani equipment will need an adapter, and chargers rated for 100-240 V work without a transformer.
Emergency
The national emergency number is 999. Save it, and your hotel address in English, before heading out of town.
Time difference
Qatar is two hours behind Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 10:00 in Doha. The country does not use daylight saving time.
Language
The official language is Arabic, but English is widely used in hotels, restaurants, shops and taxis. Signs are often duplicated in English.
Climate and season
Summer is very hot, so activities shift to morning and evening. It is cooler from November to March, which is the best time to walk along the waterfront and head into the desert.
Transport
Doha has a metro, as well as buses and taxis. For the metro and buses a travel card is used, which you can buy at a station. Lines and timetables are easy to check on a map.
Dress and etiquette
In malls, museums and mosques modest clothing with covered shoulders and knees is preferred. It is simply a practical rule, especially when visiting religious sites.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Qatar

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can see this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Qatar plan above and pay by card on the site. No passport is needed to buy.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while Wi-Fi is available.

  4. After landing at Hamad airport, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for that line.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so you do not pay for roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. Hotspot is available on most plans, check the terms on the plan page.

Before a desert trip, save an offline map and your hotel address, and agree the meeting time with your guide in advance: signal in the dunes is unstable.
