About this eSIM

The Canary Islands are an archipelago off the coast of Africa, part of Spain and popular for winter sun, beaches, hiking and whale watching. Boat trips, evening drives, mountain excursions and flights between islands make internet useful at every step, and nobody wants to hunt for a phone shop for a few days' stay. You install the eSIM at home, and on arrival you only switch data on.

Buy an eSIM or SIM card for the Canary Islands

This page is the quickest way to buy a travel eSIM for the Canary Islands from 9 500 ₸. Pick a plan, pay online and install the digital SIM card at home before the flight — no passport and no queue at an airport kiosk.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Tenerife and Gran Canaria and the rest of the country.

Compared with roaming in the Canary Islands, an eSIM is usually much cheaper for mobile data: the price of the package is fixed and known in advance. Your home number stays active on the main SIM for calls and SMS.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for the Canary Islands at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM suits the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are part of Spain but lie far from the mainland, so check the archipelago's coverage on the page of the plan you choose: look at the Spain plans above, and if your trip includes the mainland or other European countries, check the regional plans too. One profile is handy when you change island during the trip or add a couple of days in Madrid.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while mobile data runs through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS, so restaurants, car hire, boat excursions and hosts are easiest to reach on WhatsApp, where many of them take bookings.

Where an eSIM helps in the Canary Islands

Resort areas have steady coverage, while in the mountains, gorges and on the water signal depends on the terrain. These are the places where you will use data most.

South Tenerife: Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje

The resort side of the island with beaches, hotels and a port. Pleasure boats leave from here for the cliffs of Los Gigantes and for dolphin and whale watching, and ferries to La Gomera depart from Los Cristianos. Signal in resort areas is steady and weaker on the water, so save tickets and timetables in advance.

Puerto de la Cruz, Masca and the Anaga mountains

The north of Tenerife is greener and wetter than the south: an old port, a botanical garden, the village of Masca with a trail into the gorge and the laurel forests of Anaga. Weather changes quickly, and mist and cloud on the slopes are common. Signal in gorges and forest can be weak, so download the trail in advance.

Las Palmas and the mountains of Gran Canaria

Las Palmas is the island's capital, with Las Canteras beach and the Vegueta quarter, and from here a guagua bus can take you into the hills. In the centre of the island are the Roque Nublo rock and villages such as Tejeda. Roads wind, signal drops on the bends, and navigation should work offline.

Fuerteventura

An island of dunes, endless beaches and wind, popular for surfing and kiting. The main resorts are Corralejo and Costa Calma. You need internet for wind forecasts and to book a school or hire car. On the long empty roads between towns signal can weaken, so download a map of the island.

La Palma

A green island with the Caldera de Taburiente National Park and observatories on the Roque de los Muchachos ridge, known for its clear night sky, and in 2021 an eruption took place here on the slopes of Cumbre Vieja. Signal drops in the mountains and the park, so keep star charts and trails offline.

La Gomera

A small island with the laurel forest of Garajonay National Park, reached by ferry from Los Cristianos. Roads run through steep gorges, and cloud often settles on the slopes. Signal in villages is usually there and weaker on trails and switchbacks, so save the map and the time of the return ferry beforehand.

El Hierro

The westernmost and quietest island of the archipelago: diving near the village of La Restinga, rocky trails and few tourists. People usually come on local flights or by ferry, and there are few cafes and shops. For small and remote islands, check the plan page and download offline maps in advance.

Playa Blanca and La Graciosa on Lanzarote

Playa Blanca is a resort in the south of Lanzarote, from where ferries run to Fuerteventura. In the north, boats leave from Orzola for the small island of La Graciosa with its sandy streets. Check ferry timetables in advance and do not count on constant signal on board.

Useful apps for a trip to the Canary Islands

Most familiar services work as they do at home. These are the ones that help on the islands.

Google Maps

Navigation

Good for driving routes, finding beaches and restaurants and checking travel time. In the hills, download an offline map of the area: switchback roads often have no signal.

Wikiloc

Hiking

A catalogue of walking and cycling routes with tracks. You can download a track in advance and follow it without internet, which helps in the gorges of Tenerife, La Gomera and La Palma.

Binter

Local flights

The app of the airline that flies between the islands. Handy for keeping a boarding pass and checking departure times if you change island during the trip.

Fred. Olsen Express

Ferries

Tickets and timetables for ferries between some islands. Before heading to the port, check the departure time and boarding terms, and keep the e-ticket on your phone.

AEMET

Weather

The app of Spain's weather service. In the Canaries weather depends on altitude and the side of the island, and the forecast helps you choose between south and north on a given day.

Glovo

Delivery

Food and grocery delivery in tourist areas. Handy if you come back late or rent a place without a kitchen. It is better to give the address with the name of the complex.

Google Translate

Translation

Needed for menus and signs in Spanish. Download Spanish for offline use and translate text with the camera.

WhatsApp

Messenger

The way to reach hosts, boat excursions and car hire. Since most plans have no voice calls, calling through a messenger is easy.

Practical facts about the Canary Islands

Currency
The euro (EUR). Cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops, while cash is useful at markets, in small cafes and at kiosks.
Sockets
European sockets of types C and F, 230 V, 50 Hz. Phones and chargers from Kazakhstan work without an adapter.
Emergency
The single emergency number 112 works on all the islands. Save it and the address of your accommodation before setting out on a mountain route.
Time difference
The Canaries are 5 hours behind Kazakhstan. In summer the islands move to summer time and the difference shrinks to 4 hours.
Language
The official language is Spanish. English, and sometimes German, is spoken in resort areas, but in small cafes and villages it helps to have a translator at hand.
Driving and transport
Traffic drives on the right. Local buses called guaguas run on the islands, and ferries and local flights run between them. It is better to check timetables in advance, especially at weekends and on holidays.
Weather
The south of the islands is usually sunnier and drier, the north cloudier and wetter, and the mountains are noticeably cooler than the coast. Sometimes the calima arrives, a warm wind carrying dust from Africa.
Wi-Fi
Hotels usually have Wi-Fi, but beaches, boats and trails do not. For banking apps and payments, use mobile data rather than open networks.
Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to the Canary Islands

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can find this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a plan above and make sure on the plan page that the Canary Islands are covered. Pay by card on the site, no passport is needed.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, with the Quick install button or manually while you still have home Wi-Fi.

  4. After landing, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for that line.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. A hotspot for a laptop is available on plans that allow it, check the plan page for the terms.

For hiking, download the route track and an offline map: signal drops in the gorges, and navigation along a saved track works without a network.
