About this eSIM

Reunion is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean: the euro, the French language and European rules, but a fully tropical landscape of beaches, an active volcano and mountain cirques. Most people come for one or two weeks with a rental car, so navigation, bookings and weather forecasts are needed from the first hour after landing. The eSIM profile is installed at home, and on the island you only switch on data. Plans for Reunion may be listed separately or included in French and regional packages, so check the plan page above.

Where to buy an eSIM and SIM card for Reunion

This page is the quickest way to buy a travel eSIM for Reunion from 4 500 ₸. Pick a plan, pay online and install the digital SIM card at home before the flight — no passport and no queue at an airport kiosk.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage — Saint-Denis and the rest of the country.

Compared with roaming in Reunion, an eSIM is usually much cheaper for mobile data: the price of the package is fixed and known in advance. Your home number stays active on the main SIM for calls and SMS.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Reunion at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM suits Reunion

The island is small, but routes across it are scattered: beaches in the west, the volcano and lava fields in the east, three mountain cirques inland. You move between them along the coastal highway and mountain switchbacks, and a map with traffic and a weather forecast are needed almost constantly. One profile covers the whole island wherever there is coverage, and you do not need a separate SIM for each area.

Reunion is not a neighbour of Kazakhstan, so roaming is usually much more expensive than a fixed data package. Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while the internet runs through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice or SMS, so messaging apps are the easiest way to reach hosts, car rental desks and tour organisers.

Where an eSIM helps most on Reunion

The coast and towns have the densest coverage, while signal in the mountain cirques and near the volcano is less predictable. These are the places where internet is needed most often.

Roland Garros Airport and Saint-Denis

The island's main airport is next to the capital, Saint-Denis. Flights from Kazakhstan usually involve connections, and you arrive tired, so internet is useful at once: message the car rental, open the route to your accommodation, check the booking. With an eSIM installed at home, you will not need to hunt for Wi-Fi in the arrivals hall.

Saint-Gilles-les-Bains and L'Hermitage

The main beach area on the west coast, with a lagoon behind a coral reef, cafes and diving centres. Internet helps with booking excursions and water activities, messaging organisers and checking the weather. Cafe Wi-Fi can be overloaded in high season, so mobile data is more reliable.

Saint-Pierre and the south

A lively town on the south coast with a seafront, bars and a market. The island's second airport is nearby, and the town is a good base for trips to the volcano and the Cilaos cirque. Internet is handy for maps, table bookings and paying for parking through apps.

Piton de la Fournaise volcano

An active volcano in the south-east, usually reached from the Plaine des Sables plateau. Weather changes fast, fog and cloud hide the views, and access to trails can be restricted. Check fresh information and the forecast before you set off, and save an offline map in advance.

Salazie cirque and Hell-Bourg

A green cirque with waterfalls and the village of Hell-Bourg, known for its Creole architecture. The road is narrow, signal may weaken in the gorges for a while, and routes are sometimes closed after rain. Internet is useful for the map, the forecast and booking a guesthouse for the night.

Cilaos cirque

A mountain town with thermal springs, reached by a winding road from Saint-Louis. Part of the way runs through gorges, so signal may disappear and return. Download the route beforehand and keep mobile data for contacting your host and checking timetables.

Mafate cirque

A cirque with no roads: you get there on foot along trails or by helicopter. Visitors stay in small mountain guesthouses and huts that must be booked in advance. Coverage is limited and absent in places, so download maps and tell family when you start your route.

East coast and Grand Brulé

The wetter east, with lava fields, thick vegetation and waterfalls, where it rains more often than in the west. There are many stops along the road, and internet is needed for navigation and weather. Visibility drops in rain and roads can be wet, so check the forecast before you drive.

Useful apps for a trip to Reunion

Most familiar services work as they do at home, but a few apps are especially useful on the island.

Google Maps

Navigation

Suits trips by rental car along the coastal highway and mountain roads, and shows traffic and opening hours. Download an offline map of the area before visiting the cirques.

Organic Maps

Offline maps

Free offline maps with hiking trails. They are useful in the cirques and near the volcano, where mobile signal is unstable. Download the island map at home over Wi-Fi.

WhatsApp

Messenger

Convenient for contacting hosts, car rental and guides when your plan has no voice calls. Calls and messages run over the eSIM's internet.

Booking.com

Accommodation

For finding hotels, guesthouses and holiday homes on the coast and in the cirques. Booking confirmations and host contacts stay at hand even without Wi-Fi.

Météo-France

Weather

The official app of the French weather service, which also covers overseas departments. Useful in the mountains and in cyclone season, when the forecast affects your plans.

Google Translate

Translation

Needed for French signs, menus and road notices. Download French for offline use and translate text with the camera.

Practical facts about Reunion

Currency
The euro. Bank cards are accepted in most shops, restaurants and hotels, but cash is useful in small shops, at markets and in mountain huts.
Power sockets
Types C and E sockets, 230 V, 50 Hz. European plugs from Kazakhstan usually fit without an adapter.
Emergency
The single number 112 works. As in France, you can also call 15 (ambulance), 17 (police) and 18 (fire service). Save your accommodation address before a mountain route.
Time difference
Reunion is one hour behind Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 11:00 on the island. There is no daylight saving time, so the gap does not change.
Language
The official language is French, and Reunion Creole is also spoken in daily life. Staff in tourist places often speak a little English, but a translator app comes in handy.
Roads
Traffic drives on the right, as in Kazakhstan. Roads into the cirques are narrow and winding, and the coast can be congested at rush hour, so allow extra time for transfers.
Weather and cyclones
Cyclone season runs roughly from November to April, and heavy rain is possible all year, especially in the east. Follow the local weather service and do not plan mountain routes in bad weather.
Entry
Reunion is part of France. Check the current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up an eSIM before a trip to Reunion

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can see this in the settings or on the manufacturer's site.

  2. Choose a plan above, make sure Reunion is in its coverage list, and pay by card on the site. No passport is needed to buy.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the quick-install button or manually while you still have Wi-Fi.

  4. After landing at Roland Garros Airport, select the eSIM as the mobile data line and switch on data roaming for that line.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off mobile data on it so traffic does not go through roaming. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site.

Before heading to the cirques or the volcano, download offline maps and save your accommodation booking on the phone, because signal can drop in the gorges.
