- Currency
- The Georgian lari (GEL). Bank cards are accepted in most cafes, shops and hotels in the cities, but cash is useful in mountain villages and at markets.
- Sockets
- European sockets of types C and F, 220 V, 50 Hz. Phones and chargers from Kazakhstan work without an adapter.
- Emergency
- The single emergency number is 112. Save it, and the address of your accommodation, before heading into the mountains.
- Time difference
- Georgia is one hour behind Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 11:00 in Tbilisi. The country does not switch to summer time.
- Language
- The official language is Georgian. English is spoken in tourist areas, and many older people understand Russian. Georgian signs are easier to read with a translator.
- Payments and transport
- In Tbilisi the metro and city buses work with a travel card that you can buy and top up in the metro. Between cities there are minibuses, buses and trains, and it is best to check schedules in advance.
- Wi-Fi
- Hotels and cafes usually have free Wi-Fi, but speeds can be unstable. For banking apps and payments, use mobile data rather than open networks.
- Water and tipping
- Many travellers prefer bottled water, especially in villages and the mountains. Restaurants sometimes add a service charge already, so check the bill before leaving a tip.
- Entry
- Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.
