About this eSIM

Macau is a small territory in southern China with a Portuguese past: old squares with mosaic pavements sit beside huge hotels, and Taipa and Coloane keep quiet streets and beaches. You can see a lot here in a day or two, and every step needs a map, translation of signs and bus timetables. It is easy to install an eSIM at home so the internet appears right after you cross the border. Plans for Macau may be listed separately or included in regional ones, so check the plan page.

Buy an eSIM or SIM card for Macau

This page is the quickest way to buy a travel eSIM for Macau from 3 500 ₸. Pick a plan, pay online and install the digital SIM card at home before the flight — no passport and no queue at an airport kiosk.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage across Macau.

Compared with roaming in Macau, an eSIM is usually much cheaper for mobile data: the price of the package is fixed and known in advance. Your home number stays active on the main SIM for calls and SMS.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Macau at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Macau

The territory is compact, but routes across it vary: the old town on the peninsula, the islands of Taipa and Coloane, land and sea border crossings. Buses, free hotel shuttles and the Light Rail replace each other, and without a map it is easy to pick the wrong stop. One profile solves connectivity across the whole territory, and you can find the plan above on the page.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while mobile data goes through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls, so contact the hotel desk, driver or guide through messengers. That is easier than sorting out roaming terms on the spot.

Where an eSIM helps most in Macau

The network in town is dense, but on the beaches of Coloane and in narrow lanes signal can be uneven. These are the places where you will use internet most.

Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul's

The centre of the historic district: mosaic pavements, Portuguese-style buildings and narrow streets leading to the ruins of the cathedral. It is crowded here, and signs are often in Chinese and Portuguese. You need internet for maps, translating menus and finding a cafe, and at holidays and weekends it is handy to check opening hours and museum locations in advance.

A-Ma Temple and the Inner Harbour waterfront

The oldest temple on a hillside and the harbour promenade, where the route runs from the historic centre to the port. The area is stretched out, so a map helps you avoid an extra loop. If you plan to go further by taxi, call it through an app and show the address on the screen.

Macau Tower and the southern waterfront

The tower and the Nam Van lake waterfront with views of the city and the bay. People come for the views and activities, and tickets and timetables are easy to check in advance. After sunset the waterfront is lively, and mobile internet helps with ordering a car and messaging friends.

Taipa Village

A small area with old houses, colonial architecture and cafes on narrow streets. It is easy to lose your bearings here, so a map is useful even on a short route. For booking a dinner table and a taxi back, it helps to have internet at hand.

Coloane

A quiet southern island with a village, beaches and hilly trails. Buses run here, but the timetable depends on the day of the week, so check it in advance. On beaches and trails signal can be uneven, so download an offline map and save addresses.

Border crossings and ferry terminals

Leaving and entering involves queues and tickets that are best kept on the screen. You need e-tickets, timetables and messages from your hotel. Before boarding, check that the eSIM is selected as the data line and roaming is on, so connectivity does not distract you in the last minutes.

Light Rail and hotel shuttles

The light rail on Taipa and the free buses between hotels and entry points help you move quickly between districts. Check timetables and stops in a maps app, and in the evening and at weekends it is handy to have a backup, for example a taxi through an app.

Useful apps for a trip to Macau

The set of apps in Macau is almost the same as in other cities of the region, but payment services are noticeably more popular here.

Google Maps

Navigation

Shows bus routes, walking paths between districts and opening hours. Download an offline map of the old town and Taipa in case of weak signal.

Google Translate

Translation

Signs and menus can be in Chinese and Portuguese. Download the languages you need for offline use and translate text with the camera.

Alipay and WeChat

Payments

In Macau many venues accept mobile payments through these apps, but options for foreigners depend on your account and bank. So check in advance that payment works, and keep a bank card as a backup.

WhatsApp

Messenger

A handy way to contact the hotel, driver and guide. Since most plans have no voice calls, calling through a messenger is the easiest option.

Booking

Accommodation

Helps you find hotels and keeps the address and check-in details. If you stay on Taipa or Coloane, save the confirmation and your hosts' contacts.

Telegram

Messenger

Suitable for keeping in touch with companions and family, and for storing tickets and route screenshots. Download important files beforehand so they are available without internet.

Practical facts about Macau

What the place is
Macau is a special administrative region in southern China. Plans for it may be listed separately or included in regional ones, so check the plan page.

The Macanese pataca (MOP), and Hong Kong dollars are also accepted in many places. Bank cards are accepted in hotels and larger venues, while in small cafes cash is useful.
Sockets

The emergency number is 999. Save it along with your hotel address.
Time difference
Macau is three hours ahead of Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 15:00 there. There is no summer time.
Language
The official languages are Chinese and Portuguese, with Cantonese most common in daily life. In hotels and tourist places you can usually manage in English.
Transport
City buses, taxis, the Light Rail on Taipa and free hotel shuttles. The historic centre is good for walking, but distances between districts are more noticeable.

Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Macau

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can find this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Macau plan above, or a regional plan, and pay by card, no passport is needed.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while you still have Wi-Fi.

  4. After arrival, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for it.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. Sharing internet with a laptop works on plans with hotspot, check the plan page for terms.

Save route screenshots and your hotel address in Portuguese or Chinese so you can show a taxi driver even with weak signal.
