- Currency
- The Mexican peso (MXN). Cards are accepted in hotels, large shops and restaurants, but cash is useful in markets, small cafes and small towns.
- Sockets
- American-style sockets of types A and B, 127 V, 60 Hz. European plugs need an adapter. Phone chargers are usually rated 100 to 240 V, but check the label on yours.
- Emergency
- The single emergency number is 911. Save it and your accommodation address in your phone, especially before heading to remote areas.
- Time difference
- Most of the country does not switch to summer time. Mexico City is 11 hours behind Kazakhstan, Cancun 10 and Los Cabos 12. Some border cities follow different rules.
- Language
- Spanish is spoken by the vast majority. English is common in hotels and resorts, but outside them it often will not help.
- Cash and ATMs
- It is easier to withdraw cash at ATMs inside banks or shopping centres. Check the screen and the receipt before walking away, and never leave your card unattended.
- Water
- Many travellers drink only bottled water and avoid ice in doubtful places. Hotels and restaurants usually serve purified water, but if you are unsure, ask.
- Altitude
- Mexico City stands at around 2,200 metres, and Guanajuato and San Cristobal are high in the mountains too. Tiredness and shortness of breath are possible in the first days, so do not plan a packed itinerary right after the flight.
- Entry
- Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.
