About this eSIM

Hong Kong is a dense vertical city, but go beyond the skyscrapers and you find islands, beaches and mountain trails. Many people come for a few days to ride up to Victoria Peak, head to Lantau for the Big Buddha and reach Lamma Island. Every one of these days needs a map, timetables and translation, and an eSIM gives you internet as soon as you land. It is easy to install the profile at home, without buying a SIM at the airport.

eSIM, SIM card or roaming in Hong Kong

You can buy an eSIM for Hong Kong online right on this page from 3 500 ₸: choose a data plan, pay by card and get the QR code within minutes. An eSIM is a digital SIM card — it installs on your phone with no plastic card and no visit to a phone shop.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks, so you have data wherever they have coverage across Hong Kong.

Roaming in Hong Kong with a Kazakh carrier is usually far more expensive, and roaming data runs out fast. With a Funsim eSIM you pay a fixed price for a data package and keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank SMS — roaming on it can stay off.

If your phone does not support eSIM, you can buy a regular physical SIM card with data for Hong Kong at a Funsim point of sale: at Almaty and Shymkent airports, or at our offices in Almaty — 130/1 Abay St and 1 Pozharsky St. Handy if you remember about the internet right before departure.

Why an eSIM works well for Hong Kong

Hong Kong is built so that you keep moving between levels: metro, escalators, walkways between buildings, ferries to the islands and buses to rural areas. You need navigation and timetables at almost every step, and one profile works across the whole territory. See the Hong Kong plan above on the page.

Your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank SMS, while mobile internet runs through the eSIM. Most plans have no voice calls or SMS, so messengers are the easiest way to contact a hotel, driver or guide. That is especially useful in the rainy and typhoon season, when plans often change on the way.

Where an eSIM helps most in Hong Kong

The network covers the city very densely, but on trails and islands the quality of signal can differ. These are the places where you will use internet most.

Victoria Peak and Central

People get up to the Peak on the old funicular or by bus, and queues can be long. You need the phone to check timetables, tickets and weather: in fog the view from the top can disappear. Down in Central, internet helps with the map of multi-level walkways between buildings.

Lantau: Ngong Ping and the Big Buddha

Much of the island is green, and the main sight is Po Lin Monastery with its bronze Big Buddha and the Ngong Ping 360 cable car. The cable car may stop in strong wind, so check its status online. You get there by metro and bus, and on the way back a taxi or a map comes in handy.

The Dragon's Back trail

One of Hong Kong's best-known routes, on Hong Kong Island, with views of the coast and bays. The trail is popular at weekends, and in the shade of the hills signal may briefly drop. Download an offline map of the route, check the forecast and take water, keeping internet as a backup.

Sai Kung and the geopark

An area in the east of the New Territories with bays, beaches and boat trips to small islands. People come by bus or taxi, and on the water and in the parks signal can be unstable. You need internet for bus timetables, booking boats and sea conditions.

Lamma and Cheung Chau

Islands reached by ferry from Central. On Lamma you walk the trail from village to village and stop at seafood restaurants, and on Cheung Chau you stroll the waterfront and beaches. Cafes and restaurants here do not always take cards, and signal on trails can be uneven. Save the return ferry timetable in advance.

Stanley and Repulse Bay

The south coast of Hong Kong Island with a market, beaches and sea views. People come by bus or taxi, so internet is needed for timetables and the map. If evening buses on the way back are crowded, it is easier to call a car through an app, and that needs a connection.

Disneyland and Ocean Park

Two theme parks that attract families with children. Both have mobile apps with queue times, show schedules and a map, and the parks are crowded, so open Wi-Fi works unevenly. With mobile internet it is easier to keep track of ride times and stay in touch with your family.

Useful apps for a trip to Hong Kong

Most familiar services work as at home, but a few apps are especially useful in Hong Kong.

MTR Mobile

Metro

The official metro app shows the map, routes, journey times and station exits. In Hong Kong each station has many exits, and picking the right one saves a lot of time.

Octopus

Fares

The Octopus card is accepted on the metro, buses, trams and in many shops. There is also an app for a virtual card, but terms depend on the phone model, so check this before the trip.

Google Maps

Navigation

Works well in Hong Kong: shows public transport, walking routes and opening hours. For trails and islands, download an offline map of the area in advance.

MyObservatory

Weather

The Hong Kong Observatory's app shows the forecast and typhoon and rainstorm warnings. Useful from May to November and before heading to trails and islands.

Google Translate

Translation

Handy for Chinese signs and menus. Download Chinese (Traditional) for offline use and translate text with the camera.

WhatsApp

Messenger

Widely used to contact hotels, guides and drivers. Since most plans have no voice calls, calling through a messenger is the easiest option.

Transport
MTR metro, buses, trams, ferries and taxis. An Octopus card is the easy way to pay, but study the route map beforehand, since transfers between lines can be long.
Weather

Entry
Check current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan before the trip.

How to set up your eSIM before a trip to Hong Kong

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. You can find this in the settings or on the manufacturer's website.

  2. Choose a Hong Kong plan above and pay by card on the site, no passport is needed. If you are travelling on, look at the regional plans.

  3. Install the eSIM at home by QR code, the Quick install button or manually while you still have Wi-Fi.

  4. After landing, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch data roaming on for it.

  5. Keep your main SIM for calls and bank SMS, but turn off data on it so traffic does not go through roaming.

  6. If the package runs out, buy extra data on the site. Sharing internet with a laptop works on plans with hotspot, check the plan page for terms.

Download offline maps of Hong Kong Island and Lantau at home: on trails and in the shade of the hills signal can be weak, and a map that works without internet helps.
