- Currency and payment
- The Kyrgyz som (KGS). In Bishkek and larger cities many cafes and shops accept cards and payment services, but in villages, yurt camps and markets cash is useful.
- Power sockets
- Types C and F sockets, 220 V, 50 Hz. Phones and chargers from Kazakhstan work without an adapter. Power may be limited in yurts and mountain camps, so take a power bank.
- Emergency
- You can usually dial 112, and 101 (fire), 102 (police) and 103 (ambulance) also work. Before a mountain route save your accommodation address and leave your rough plan with family.
- Time difference
- Kyrgyzstan is one hour ahead of Kazakhstan: when it is noon in Astana, it is 13:00 in Bishkek. There is no daylight saving time, so the gap does not change.
- Language
- The state language is Kyrgyz, and Russian is widely used and has official status. In cities and resorts Russian is usually no problem, while in remote villages a translator app is useful.
- Roads
- Roads between cities are mostly paved, but passes may have narrow stretches, rockfall and sudden weather changes. In winter and the shoulder season check road conditions and tyres.
- Travelling by car
- Before leaving, check the requirements for vehicle documents, insurance and carrying goods on the border services' websites. Plan overnight stops where there is accommodation and signal, not on a pass.
- Entry
- Before the trip check the current entry rules for citizens of Kazakhstan and the conditions for a vehicle.
